I'm starting to get a bit pissed off with having to keep opting out of registering for OTP. I like how they grey out the 'register later' button to make you think you can't click on it, and do the same with the 'prefer to register later' link the first time they try to second-guess me. Also the page hasn't even been proof read, looks like a phishing site hehe

Anyway, that isn't my point. Reading the FAQ, it says that OTP will, in future, be required, and e-banking will be 'read only' unless you subscribe to OTP. This requires one to have a registered mobile phone for the passcode to be sent to you over SMS for use with 'certain transactions'.

Since that seems to imply you will no longer be able to use their online banking service, which requires a mobile phone, what about those that don't have one? I realise most people do, but that isn't the point. If you're abroad, you'll pay for that SMS. You may not even have a signal. Those that don't have a mobile phone will need to get one. Well, that wasn't in my terms and conditions ...

I don't know much about OTP. What are the chances of this becoming mandatory? Since I can refuse to register and have been doing so for ages, anyone have any idea how long I have before Santander make my e-banking access read-only?

Looks like I'll be changing bank. I fail to see how OTP is any more secure than 3DS (which is not), since if anyone does manage to get my e-banking login details, they can just go and change the mobile number from there ...

Agreed, it is a PITA, I registered my phone but have done all kinds of transfers and money shuffling since and never once been sent a OTP.

There are lots of good cashback offers on at the moment for shifting current accounts and they typically do all the paperwork and DD shifting to boot.

Cant see myself sticking around much longer.

Since I don't know what OTP is, I stopped reading after the first line.

Care to elaborate?

I just googled the acronym. Apparently it means 'Out of Toilet Paper'.

One Time Password - i.e. a password that is used for a single transaction and then destroyed/invalidated.

One Time Passcode

I registered for it with Abbey about 3 months ago. Had to use it for the first time on Sunday when I transferred some money. I don't really have a problem with it.

Oh, ETA: I did, however, open a new current account with a different bank, and a new credit card/ISA elsewhere yesterday so that I can move away from Abbey for other reasons... namely they're the least helpful bunch of s I have ever encountered

I'm having problems too with Abbey/Santander. It seems buying things online and travelling the country seems to alert their fraud squad, and despite them doing the automated call check(which I don't mind) still put a block on your card. Dead handy if your job requires staying in hotels and hiring cars and in fact generally paying for stuff. All you get is sent round the call centre until you stumble upon the guy who can unlock it.

I have registered for OTP, it only comes into play if you try to move money out of the bank, one off bill payments etc.

I have done this recently, it texted a code to my mobile, I entered it and the payment went through no problem. You don't need to use it between Santander accounts.

Can't see a problem with it myself.
