madfuriousfuriousshootpunch Well, it had to happen sometime & whilst I remain lucky, my ever-so-cautious & paranoid wife has had her Barclays debit card cloned somewhere.

£630 spent in France at an electronics place (online I suppose).

Apart from big High St names, she only really uses it for petrol & doesn't do anything unusual with it, it's usually me that buys most of the groceries etc so my suspicions fall towards a Shell petrol station that she frequents but nothing can be proven.

Hey ho - she's spoken to the bank who are sending a new card & forms out. Anyone know how long it'll take to get the money back?

At 8 months pregnant, she could do without this hassle & is ready to rip someone's head off. Preferably someone French & thieving but I'm hiding under my desk just in case...

bds.

HSBC were very good when it happened to me. Sent out a list and asked which were my transactions, closed the account, moved all the DDs / SOs over for me and sent a new card - took about two weeks to be completely sorted.

Sorry to hear this. Petrol stations are notorious for cloning cars. Particularly the Asian independent ones, like some of the BP stations.

Depends if the fraud was chip&pin or not. Also with it being a debit card you may have more trouble getting the money back. I worked for Barclays fraud department briefly and while the system that picks up the fraudulent transactions is actually pretty good, the follow-up is awful. I think it's still outsourced to Mumbai so you'll rarely get to speak to anyone in the UK about it. Tends to be a case of sending numerous copies of the same form back to an address in Leicester and being told that you have to wait a while for the funds to appear in your account. Good luck.

If you don't get a positive response, you could always threaten to go to the press - it does work with your bank. It shouldn't take too long to sort out.

This happened to me, to the tune of £1,600.
IN liverpool
i live in manchester.
credit card did eventually pay me back.
but in the mean time reduced my credit limit to what was on the card. i got lots of crap from it and a reduced credit limit etc. it took me three months to sort it all with lots of phone calls and letters and stress. i also got a gesture of good will from the bank for all the agro it caused.

It's a bugger when it happens, but spare a thought for the retailer they spent the money with.

It's their money that's repaid to you, the bank do not cover the cost of this themselves....

You didn't know this?

Most people don't.

The banks do not cover the costs of credit card fraud.

The funds are taken back from the retailer that the money was spent with. The only time this doesn't happen is if the retailer has gone out of business (normally due to credit card fraud).

Spare a thought for the smaller retailers who have to pay for fraud, it all comes out of their pocket.

Yes, it's 'wrong'. Part and parcel of web retail.

We are a small retailer and had a chargeback on a telephone order placed with a stolen credit card, once bitten etc., we didn't know until 4 months later about the chargeback so that is an indication how slow the banks work at.

It's not so much the banks, it's when people report it to them as fraudulent.

A lot of internet retailers are now declining telephone orders, as they're less safe than going through 3D secure, IP checks, etc.

Be thankful it was only one chargeback, it sound like you've been lucky.

Card fraud cost me just over £10k last year, a huge amount of money in anybody's book!

2 weeks!!!

I had my account scammed to the tune of about 5k, they refunded it back within 2 hours. All I had to do was sign the form when it came to me confirming which were my transactions and which were not. I was pretty impressed with the service.

But, I wasnt impressed with the attitude, the card that was cloned was only ever used once - it was a new card and I used it once in a cashpoint - so I was able to tell the bank exactly what machine was scammed and exactly what time it happened. They didnt care at all...

I'm extra careful with using it now, but I suspect it will happen again at some point!

I had one of my credit cards cloned twice and the credit card company couldn't give a toss.

What surprised me is that one of the things it was used for was to buy flight tickets - apparently that's common, but I would have thought easy to trace and even nab the person in the seat. But obviously the perps realise the banks don't care.

I rang one place up - an online jeweller. The manager told me about the charge-back and he was most distressed. I ended up apologising to him!

Re petrol stations - someone posted on here that they worked in a bank and they always used cash to buy petrol. What does that tell you?

Kudos

Slightly off topic...I was burgled a few years back and a credit card was stolen. £2k of stuff bought from Argos in a couple of hours (PAYG phones). Credit card company (Virgin/MBNA) knew which stores, exact times etc but weren't interested.

Told me that I was liable as I must have had PIN lying around. It took me to go to the stores and get copies of receipts which showed goods had been signed for rather than Chip/PIN but they still weren't convinced. The clincher was that I produced their letter with the PIN number flap still in place - I had kept this unopened in my safe at work as I only used card for 0% Balance Transfers.

Positive outcome. Police caught the burglar who told them that another fella also did it but he had been subsequently murdered...

I bank with Natwest and we recently had the same happen with £450 being taken out of our account and used to buy goods online

It took Natwest 1 week to get the money back into our account, we ended up going into the bank to sort it. Was taking too long waiting for the forms to come in the post wink

Yeah, I just assumed two weeks was about the standard, I only had £190 stolen from my account however.

I was pretty upset with the attitude of the banks also, the money was used to top up an 02 Mobile phone so I would have thought very easy to track down (unless it was a criminals PAYG of course) but no mention of contacting the Police, just that they would be checking it was indeed an un-authorised debit from my account (I took that to mean they were checking it was not my phone!!)

Then never heard anything more after I had my new card thorugh and went to the cash machine a few weeks later and realised I had more money than I thought.
