FTSE tracker shares question - newbie
Discussion
Are there share funds you can buy into that distributes you investment across the FTSE100/200 ETC?
Ignoring any costs of buying and selling shares, if I had invested £100 in the FTSE 100 when it was at roughly 3500 points and it is now 5300 points or so, would my 'fund' now be worth around £160, i.e. a %age increase in line with the increase in the 'points value' of the index?
If I were to now remove my £160 would the gain of £60 be taxed at 40%?
I have never traded shares either virtually or otherwise, so apologies for what might seem like a stupid question.
When the index was 3500 I had quite a bit of cash knocking about and I thought about buying some shares, hence the question (but a house came along and I used the money for the deposit so I didnt do so).

You could try looking at ETFs (exchange traded funds or ishares) there's a ftse 100 fund that invests across the ftse so in general if the ftse is up, the fund is too. Etfs are stamp exempt too which is a bonus and they are traded just like normal shares. There are loads of different funds eg ftse 100, 250, 350 as well as different Market sectors.
