Cashing foreign cheques

I've been receiving a few cheques in American dollars, since getting into online advertising and affiliate networks.
I have a current account with HBOS, and their policy is that all cheques over 1000ukp need to go for "processing/collection", which currently takes over 28 days. This is a major inconvenience, and I'm looking for other options. I tried those cheque cashing places, but they won't do foreign cheques.
Can anyone with experience in foreign cheques suggest any other options for me?

Have you asked around at other banks, as each bank seems to be slightly different in the way they deal with foreign cheques? What about opening a dollar account?
