This started life in Gassing a month or more ago but this is probably the place for it now that things have moved on and it has lost its motoring edge. I was flammed for not noticing this in Gassing, and the problem may now be 6 times worse, so here goes:

I have quite a number of Direct Debits and SO's running through my 2 current accounts. One DD was to a well known insuranmec company for £13 a month which I assumed was the off-road insurance on an old car I have sat in the garage for which I changed the type of policy I had in 2008. It looked like they had continued to take the £13 a month after the policy ended in 2008 so they might owe me £156. That was bad enough.

To cut a long story short, the policy wasn't for the car and the insurance company (after some ringing around) tell me it is a Life Policy but they cannot find any record of a policy. All they could suggest I do is cancel the DD and see which of their units writes to me complaining.

I have a theory that it is an old life policy covering the mortage I had at my last house (6+ years ago) which should have been cancelled when we moved. If it wasn't then I have to accept I have have had 2 lots of life insurance on my mortage for the past 6 years, but I am not convinced there has actually been a policy in place because I have been right up to the CEO's ofice and they cannot find this policy.

Question: how can I know that insurance has been in force given that they are denying the policy exists?

Question: if they say it has been, should I ask for proof and what form should that take?

Question: If they say there has been a policy but cannot prove it, or else the DD ending doesn't trigger a letter, how do I get my dosh back?

Question: how much of a numpty am I?

Yes they do. They had suggested I reclaim it through the DD indeminity at one point when we thought it was a motor policy.
