Financial Consultancy - where to start?
Discussion
This is probably off at a slight tangent, but have you thought about teaming up with someone who already has that knowledge (tax etc) to build software between you? Sharing expertise and all that.
I say that as i am at the opposite side of the equasion as I work in financial services (collective investments to be exact so not linked to what you are looking for) and have a very good idea of how software could be developed to take a lot of the admin burden associated with my job. Trouble is, whilst my team and I are very good on Excel we are not programmers and don't really have the time to learn to be.
Just a different angle on it for you

As you say its not what you were thinking of, but just a thought that occured to me given our situation.
Our current system is nothing more than Excel; so good at what it does, but quite manual.
Our issue is not that there is no existing software, there is some of sorts, but it is stupid expensive. The large companies can chuck six figures at an off-the-shelf system, but we certainly can't. So i'm wondering if it would be cheaper (if even possible) to create a programme myself.
Can I teach myself programming, can you learn personal finance, or should we all just stick to what we're experts at?!
