I've seen it said a few times, that receiving payment by cheque is not as secure as you expect, as a cheque can be recalled by the issuer even after it has been paid into your account and the funds have cleared.

Is this true?

And if it is true how would it work if the funds were transfered or spent?

If in doubt ask your bank to 'special' it. This doesn't clear it any quicker but it gets a definite answer from the payer's bank as to whether there are funds available and all is well
