Just had a look at my bank account and found that £50 has been taken out of my account. Normally this isn't a problem, but this month i am utterly skint, and that £50 is my food for the next 7 days (i don't have access to credit at the moment for a variety of reasons).

As you might expect i'm a little peeved about this so phone the bank to find out what is going on.

Turns out that a branch in south wales has made a cockup (someone wandered in to get £50 out of their own account, and the branch debited my account by accident). Fine, these things happen occasionally.

Thing is, the bank want 7 days to re-imburse me!

Soo that's value beans for the rest of the week for me.

I know its not a lot of cash, but at the moment it really IS a lot of cash when you hardly have any. Bank are being entirely unhelpful and i'm feeling really angry.

threaten them with small claims court?

Needed 50 for travel to work which you now can no longer do so you will be claiming for 5 days wages.

Call them up with this statement, may hurry them up a bit

yes absolutely, I'd be doing just this and turning into Mr stty Customer very quickly. Amazing how they can suddenly be helpful.

Surely they will give you a £50 overdraft free of charge in the meantime? Its the least they could do.

In light of their cock-up, they should be able to authorise a free £50 overdraft on the spot. (This might help your credit rating, too)

The bank dropped my overdraft last month by £2500 without telling me.

i had 10 direct debits bounced and a £35 charge on each by the bank themselves.



10 minute call later, all cash was back in the bank. wkers!

Yep, that's what I'd be demanding.

And of course re-imbursement of your fees for time taken and costs incurred in dealing with their mistake.

It's such horsest!

The time it takes to tap some details into a computer to authorise a £50 overdraft is exactly the same time it would have taken to tap some details into a computer to credit £50 back into your account.

It's bloody virtual money FFS, it's not like someone has to go to the vault, take £50 of notes from the money box of the other customer and walk to your money box and put it in.

I hate the fact that Bank Transfers take more than 24 hours to take place.

There's utterly no reason for it.

Shouldn't be the case as money can be transferred straightaway via Faster Payments. I have a few bank accounts which I pay bills, transfer and do general banking without ever having to pop into a branch - only do it on occasions where I have to deposit cash.

I'm quite anal when it comes to banking, one account I have for savings and my salary is paid in, another one for direct debits to come off and another one for general spending on groceries, petrol etc. That way I'm in control of all my outgoings to the penny. fk bank charges.

Obviously not every banks subscribe to the Faster Payments yet but if they are you should take advantage of that service.

Back on topic, branch should credit your account right away or at least set up a temporary overdraft.

How can you not be in control of you spending if you have only one account?
Surely it's easier to manage one account rather than juggle 3 ?

Banks don't just charge for the sake of it.
Yes their charges are often unreasonable but there's normally a reason they apply them.

Very true that you can manage on one account. It's not really that much hassle as everything is done online so no problems shifting money about and doing general banking.

3 is easier than one once you have put a little bit of set up effort in.

My monthly routine is something like this:

Salary arrives in my current account.
Standing order moves one chunk into savings.
Another standing order moves enough money to cover the bills and food into the (joint) household account.

What is left in my current account is then spending money, and my bank sends me text messages regularly to keep me up to date on the amount left. If it hits zero then it's not a problem as I know all the bills will be paid from the other account which always has a surplus in.

At the end of the month, anything left in my current account is automatically moved to savings.

I find it much easier than trying to keep track of what is still due to go out before the next payday.

My opinion on this would be that no one has withdrawn any money from my account. Only I can withdraw money from my account and as the bank has already stated, someone else, not me, withdrew the money. Therefore the money could not possibly have come from my account. It came from the bank. The bank fked up and are making me the fall guy whilst they attempt to sort it out.

This is exactly the same with bank fraud when people withdraw thousands of pounds from your account.

“Hello sir, I’m afraid that someone has cloned your bank card and fraudulently withdrawn £3k from your account”

“So it wasn’t me that withdrew it then, it was someone else?”

“That’s right sir, someone has fraudulently withdrawn £3k from your bank account”

“But I thought that I was the only person allowed to withdraw money from my account?”

“That’s right sir”

“And you’re saying that someone else, someone who isn’t me, has withdrawn money from my account?”

“Yes sir”

“So in that case, the money hasn’t come from MY account has it? As you’ve just stated that only I can withdraw money from my account, yet “someone” else withdrew it, so it can’t possibly be from my account, as I didn’t withdraw it?”

“Err….erm….”

“What’s happened, is due to your bank’s slack and incompetent security measures, someone has been able to fraudulently withdraw £3k from……that right, from YOU, THE BANK. And what you’re now doing is trying to get me to take the hit, the hassle and the lost interest on behalf of your gross incompetence and flawed security measures after someone stole money from YOU!!”
