SO, 5 weeks ago I got made redundent and have just been through the process of trying to claim for Jobseekers Allowance, which today I got declined due to not paying enough NI in a previous year, Apr 2006 to Mar 2007. Apparently I am £400 in deficit on my NI contributions for this year and so as a result I will not get any help.

For most of that year I was being paid PAYE through the agency that recruited me, though there was about 8 to 10 weeks where I was using an umbrella company who were responsible for paying my tax and NI. I do not know the full circumstances around where the deficit has come from as no one is able to tell me and I have no understanding on how any of this works.

If I were to get a loan to pay off the NI deficit would this then mean I would qualify for the Jobseekers allowance and any other benifits? I spoke to the NI office and they say that every other year going back to 1988 is fully contributed and I have always been working PAYE other than when I went through this umbrella company. To make things worse, the company I use folded in 2007 and so I have no way to trace what they paid etc (I have lost all my old files).

Any help on this would be a great help and hopefully stop me worrying myself silly about whether I can afford to live etc.

thats this country summed up for you isnt it. You pay like a good little worker most of your life, have one company fk you over for a small period of that then when you really need it you get shafted from behind. All this while some immigrant sits in his warm fully furnished, free, house.
