Just seen a reference to this in the lounge and was wondering if anyone had one/has used one and would they recommend it?

How does it work, do you simply transfer the cash to the card online/in the post office and then that's the balance of the card?

You've got the idea of how they work.

I've got a Euro one as I'm working for a few months in the Netherlands. Works reliably over here and got it as I wanted a back up to my debit card.

My daughters took them on holiday, enabling them to leave their bank cards at home. One in Euros (travelling for 4 weeks) the other in US dollars ( working for 10 weeks in Camp America), both worked fine and accepted at all cashpoints / shops / restaurants, I could keep an eye on how much money left on cards and top up when funds running low

These types of card are also offered by both First Choice and Thomson for US$ and €......worth checking around to get the best rates when buying them initially.

Also look at the travelx and Caxton FX cards. Remeber that the upfront cost of the cards or on-going charges may be worth it if the exchange rate is good enough. IIRC Caxton and Travelex tend to have the best exchange rates and I know that both are excellant programmes run by very good companies, not always the case in the world of pre-pay!

I've been looking through some of the suggestions of alternative card and the Caxton FX one seems to be a decent deal there's barely any fees and the exchange is ok too. Thanks a lot.
