The Amex 1.5% cashback is pretty good, not all places take them but the most common spending (fuel, supermarket) should be ok.

Egg are bring back their 1% cashback card.
Failing that there are specific cards that may offer benefits applicable to you, for example Play.com give 1% back if you like DVDs and cds, Shell give 1% cashback plus 3% off fuel if you drive a car, or Sky offer discounts off your monthly subscriptions...

I've found the egg money card very good (Different to the egg credit card). It pays 1% cash back on all spending (up to a maximum cash back of £200 i think).
I've been using this one as my only cc for a couple of years. It's nice and simple, is accepted everywhere, and Egg were very good at dealing with a fraud and issuing a replacement card. The cashback deal is nice and simple, although others have better introductory offers.
