What are people's thoughts these days?

We'll be moving credit card soon as Sky are discontinuing there's - we used to pay off huge chunks of our Sky bill with it.

Mrs Puggit has identified our target credit card as an Amex which gives Nectar points.

My worry is that Amex is still not accepted everywhere, have things changed? What are the thoughts on this? I don't need the Platinum Amex for BA/Lounge access as I'm bmi Gold...

Indeed it is not accepted everywhere - not by a long stretch. I used to have an Airline affinity card which was a Visa & they changed it to Amex last year. I have since had to take out another VISA to use when the AMEX isn't accepted.

I still use the Amex as first choice & last month the bill on the Amex was only marginally bigger than the VISA. There have been recent months where the VISA bill was larger. The Amex was refused yesterday at the local Audi dealer for a £35 part. However, most petrol stations & the supermarkets do seem to take it.

Also, if you use Amex with Paypal you get fleeced because they convert the transaction into dollars & then back again.

If you want a quiet life & a card that will be accepted everywhere then get a VISA or a Mastercard

As a retailer Amex are slow to pay and charge considerably more per transaction than visa/mc.
I don't know if this is different in the States.
Equally I probably only take 5% of my CC transactions by Amex.

The clue is in the name.

It would be British Express if it could be used everywhere in the UK.

That said, most places I need to use it accept it, and the airmiles soon mount up.

I always use Amex with paypal, when I check my statement the original bill is more but the 'correction' payment more than makes up for it, by about 10%.

Also when an item arrived faulty from a business seller, and the seller refused to refund the return postage I called Amex for an instant refund. They refunded the original bill and forgot to take back the 'correction' payment, leaving me in profit.

I stopped taking Amex in my shop about 12 months ago. Charges to us were just too high

Not generally a problem in restaurants, hotels and service type places but not so good for shopping outside of major retail chains.

Accepted everywhere in the US, as its name suggests

I've got one of those Lloyds Duo cards, one Amex, on Mastercard. Amex is accepted everywhere I've tried except B&Q, my local independent opticians and my local pizza place. MC for those.

Amex is definitely not accepted everywhere - mainly not in the smaller shops/cafes and such.

Most big stores accept them - as well as online places (mostly).

I keep a mastercard with cashback for those transactions.

Most places in the UK take it but very few places in Western Europe and almost no one in France - which is a real pain. Interestingly, its taken almost everywhere in Russia...

Amex charge a fortune for retailers to accept it, don't know off the top of my head what the % is, but it's LARGE, dealership I work for will only accept it for service and accessories but wouldn't on the purchase of a motorcycle unless client pays the fee.

I have the Lloyds TSB duo and the only place it's being declined is KFC. I tend to use the Amex as a first choice forthe airmiles (1 airmile for every £10 spent compared to every £50 with the Mastercard). Plus the retailer has to pay an extra 2.5% everytime I use it!

American Express is *not* a credit card, its a charge card. hehe

That was always drilled into us when I used to work for them.

As mentioned, it is not accepted everywhere in the US mainly due to the much higher percentage the service establishments have to pay. The card does have its perks, but they are often not well known and to be fair many of the other card companies have caught them up. The card has also lost alot of its cache as it used to be seen as only available to the priviledged. They used to be much harder to get than Visa and Mastercard etc.

Mine is an Airline affinty card run by MBNA so no additional perks that I am aware of....its been a pain in the neck in comparison to the old Visa card. (and its a credit card as far as I know - looks like a credit card, works like a credit card - its a credit card!!) hehe

You do get a great travel insurance thrown in as well. Girlfriend had to claim on it after falling off-piste in Chamonix and destroying her knee in the process. AMEX footed the bill which was in excess of 10k without a question, sent her flowers in the hospital etc...

PayPal have now sorted out the charges when you pay by Amex (finally) - what you see is what you pay, you don't lose out anymore on the exchange rate (on sterling purchases of paypal).

Amex are good, customer service is better than some I've used, Supermarkets, Petrol stations and most large City stores accept the card
