Im 24 and I earn above the national average but still I find it hard to cope on my wage a lot of the time. I dont have an extravagant lifestyle and go out for meals about once a Month maximum. I just wonder how people get buy who earn less than me and have kids etc.. In your opinion what is a good salary for a 24 year old?

Not a very helpful answer but how long is a piece of string?

It's so dependent on factors such as where you live and work, what industry in, what level you are educated to and so forth that there is no "right" answer.

At age 24, I had just about qualified and was earning (from dim and distant memory) around £21K (that was in 1996). If you're earning more than the national average, I'd say you're doing OK.

It just makes me wonder, you hear about people earning £10k and even less. How do you even live on that!?

I guess the answer is that you don't live on that, you get by on that. If you strictly only buy what you need then it's doable. Ever been a student?

Yeah I did a masters degree for 4 years.. Living in a shared house between 6 made bills very cheap though.

answer the OP question....at 24 if you earn between 30-40 thats good 40-50 very good over 50, excellent.

when i was 24 all the guys i worked with were making 100k + and we were always broke....my brother made £20k and always had some spare! I suppose the same applies to those on 10k....sensible head on and you can get by.

I'm just 25 and bring home 28k a year, guttingly my wife brings in 34k pa. With a combined income of over 60k and a mortagage of 160k, 2 cars, no kids, and a "normal" lifestyle (holiday 1xpa, eat out 2x a month etcetc)we still struggle... infact i'm looking at bills right now scratching my head thinking "how the feck am i going to make that work!"

I have found its managable but the pressure has certainly been turned up in the recent economic climates. Makes me sick when i see my mates living with M+D and winging about being skint.... how? How i ask! wink

In my expirence you always live beyond your means, it's just a balancing act...

Pretty much same as me to be honest. If I was living at home with M+D I would be loaded! Must work harder or find a new job!

I try and not worry about it now.

I soon will have friends that will earn far more and far less than me.

At 21 I am happy to bring home something that is worth in excess of 30k, always remember the package biggrin, I get a car for practically free which accounts for a decent chunk of cash each year.. However for reasons including rent, debt etc I don't have a vast amount spare.

I'm scratching my head wondering how the fk can it not work??!! Granted i earn more but my mortgage is more. We have an 18 month old, 2 cars etc. The only thing out of your list that we don't do is holidays(as i can't). The phrase you live to your means is certainly true i guess.

That must be £3750 net of tax per month - your mortgage cant be more than about £800pcm. How do you not live?!

My mortgage is for £99k and costs £700pcm inc redundancy & sickness cover, so I can see that mortagage inc life cover etc approaching £1k.

As GWiz said though, it is a balancing act and you do indeed live to your means.

Just wish I had a wife who earned £30k as well as me. Actually scrap that. I had a wife once and getting shot of her cost me a fortune...

The interest on a 99k mortgage at 5% is £412 per month - you must either have a short(ish) mortgage or a very high interest rate?

on salary of under 25k, mortgage of about 39k left, usually have a lot more money at the end of the month

could earn more money, but sort of stuck in the job for various reasons, eg today and yesterday was too hot and decided to work from home, so like the flexibility smile

company car, so anything goes wrong it is a phone call to fix, never have to pay for car parking at work as I work on site and the client pays for it smile

house has new bathroom, kitchen and central heating a few years back, but needs a service on the boiler, think that was 3-4 years old ?

outgoings usually less than salary and so not an issue smile

Yeah its about that per month. it varys +/- 500 a month but never higher then 3800. Mortgage is 950 with the trimmings... We incurred a lot of debt about 20k i suppose and we have just been shifting that. The reason we have it was through various deposits for the house and improvements i took off family/friends and a couple from the bank. I must admit i have got stuck into a fairly healthy pension that costs me a bit. I know i live comfortably but still i never seem to have cash, and only just balance the books.... i would probably be the same if i was on 600k, just running an Enzo and Zonda F, and losing silly money on the stock exchange.... Its all relative..

As previously said, its difficult to say whats a good wage as eevryone is differently.

When i was at school (im only 21 now) i decided that a good wage would be:

£15,000 @ 19 yearsold
£22,000 @ 22 years old
£28,000 @ 25 years old
£30,000 @ 28 years old

I never in my wildest dreams would've thought i'd have smashed all of them targets at 21 - well i have and i live more than comfortably with my girlfriend and her two kids.

Sold life assurance (simplified answer) I had no real qualifications and a baby on the way at 21 so i went for an interview and got lucky...they say your kids cost a fortune, without mine i'd still be a gym instructor of £11k pa! (dont tell them...they'll want more pocket money wink )
