Pension fund after Certificates after a death

We've just reported a death to the Pension Fund (AON / Merck UK) for a parent and theyve asked for our original marriage certificate and birth certificate - seems a bit strange? We only expect that we had to notify them of the death to stop the pension?

Any ideas?

Possibly to check if any relations/descendants are eligible for further payments under the scheme rules.


I had to do similar, although I actually declined as there was one person who was clearly eligible (spouse) and I didn't want to cause yet more hassle/upset for those who had just lost a sibling at a very young age
