Tax exempt pension contributions
Discussion
I’ve never seen anything on here about this but does anyone have experience of exceeding the current £60K (or previous £40K) annual pension contribution tax relief allowance without any carry over available? I understand that a self assessment should be submitted but do HMRC get notified/make contact?
Thanks

Yep, ive gone over once due to some extra bonus I received late on in the tax year, im a PAYE employee so pension contributions go out by default into workplace pension.
I do a self assessment each year, so just put the numbers in as usual and the online tool works out tax to be paid or refunded. I still had a tax rebate due, just not as much as previous years.
HMRC dont contact you, its your responsibility to notify them of changes. You can notify them via phone, or online through your Personal Tax Account.
