I've spent the last couple of years in the US and have about $20k in a US account. The whole time I've been away the dollar has been strong against the pound (1.52 to 1.55) and now it' (1.66 today) and I stand to lose a grand or so over the last two years average. Any advice on how to get the best rate rather than just using my banks global transfer options and taking the hit?

I'm living in the States at the moment and use Voltrex for my transfers. PM me if you want a direct link to the guy I use. They're fast and efficient and I haven't had any issues with them.

Dropping like a stone today so don't be too hasty.

I chased this for many years when I was earning USD, my best was 1.35, when I exchanged half of what I'd saved up (should have done the lot!) My worst was 2.10!!! I just went through my bank, from my USD to GBP account, I really couldn't find a better rate from somewhere that I trusted.

If you are returning to UK why not just write yourself a cheque and use it open a Dollar account in UK.

You save TT sending cost and possible rec costs at a UK Bank.
Then change it when the rate is a bit better.
The spread should also be much kinder when it's an internal transaction.

1.66 is a joke.
