Ok,

So I am fed up of putting spare cash in accounts with little interest. I want to play with some money. I can afford to lose it. I have plenty of cash in places for long term gains.

With that out of the way, I would like to invest in something, something I can change on a whim and something I can make short term (< 1yr) gains or loses.

What would you do?

If you can afford to lose it - futures options; just be careful about the gearing.

Open a share dealing account, there is loads of useful info on here in the shares tips thread. You could easily double your money or loose a fair chunk of it. Have a look through the past threads on here to get an idea.

£2.5k on black, it'd be an adrenaline filled 10 seconds of waiting for the ball to land and a 50% ROI on your £5k if it comes in. smile

Wanna gamble.
Some American stuff.
Diamond Foods DMND report due on the 30th, up $3.00 last couple of days with 3 times regular volume.
Somebody knows something, I don'tsmile I have some

Hippcricket, formally Augme HIPP I just made 57% on this but should go further, just dropped back for a breather. Maybe. Still have some, just sold half

Ambarella AMBA currently $19 target 25, I lost patience with this one and sold at 18 and change.

Slightly longer term, a couple of years, would be a Latin American fund. Brazil has the World Cup next year and the Olympics two years later. It has to invest heavily in infrastructure, it will of course fund this with Bonds, but that money will pass through to the construction industry.
It is also possible a lot of money will be used to empty the shanties, sort of "here is fifty bucks, now pxxs off". That should up the sales of Sony Trinatrons and Nikesbiggrin
Brazil really needs its infrastructure improving, specifically roads and ports to become more competitive commodity wise, as its transportation costs are out of line with other countries.

Current valuations of Brazil are quite low.
Optimist return 80% in 2.5 to 3 years, downside risk.... tolerablesmile

Suitable for 5 to 10% of investable assets.

Now back to my other browser to watch the Dow plummet.

Re options and how to make / lose a lot quickly.

Today's FT p18 - "African Minerals burnt short sellers this week after a $1bn investment from China sent the miner up 37%... about 7% of the shares had been out on loan to short sellers, with many investors having predicted that the group would not be able to afford a mine expansion."
