Hi,

Bit of an interesting one……

My Folks a long time ago bought some shares in a medical company, and the shares where worth around 1p from their memory. The company went into liquidation around 2008, so they thought that was that.

Yesterday they got a phone call from what looks like an accountancy firm saying they want to buy the shares on behalf of a medical company. This company looks to be the new name for the original medical company…….which also seems to have gone into liquidation. The accountancy firm I offering around £15 a share.

We have an email from accountancy firm wanting us to sign a Confidential Memorandum of Non-Disclosure before they will go on.

All this seems very strange indeed, anyone got any ideas????

Cheers!

Scam.

I have clients who are approached on this basis all the time. The next likely step if you are silly enough to respond will likely be an admin fee or somesuch. But there are many variations and the scam evolves of course...

They'll be very plausible, and persistent. It works well as a scam because people are keen to recoup losses on shares they've lost badly on, and like all the best scams it appeal to our natural greediness (not meant offensively). Do yourself a favour and move on...

Tell you have 1,000 shares and ask for a cheque for £15K...

Do they show up on Google?

I(f it looks like, an accountancy firm that should be very easy to verify.

Accountancy firms are USUALLY registered with their professional bodies - ACA, ACCA etc. If they are a bona fide accountancy firm, the relevant professional body will be able to verify that they exist.

If you do find the accountancy firm and they are bona fide then i'd phone them up (using their main number) and ask for the person who contacted you.

Honestly dont waste your time with the above suggestions...

This is just a sophisticated variation on 419 fraud, I know a lot of accountants on here offer good advice in their particular field of expertise but this happens to be mine!

You might also come across the scam if you own shares in a company and receive a call from someone offering to buy them, usually at a higher price than their market value.

http://www.fca.org.uk/consumers/scams/common-scams...

If it sounds too good to true it is.... and this one has been doing the rounds for some time.

Thanks for the reply chaps, bit disappointing as would have been about £80K !

I'll copy and past the email which might help others receiving similar calls:

With reference to your recent conversation with us; we have attached the
standard Confidential Questionnaire and Non-Disclosure Agreement.

We ask that you kindly complete the attached, ensuring that your full name
and number of shares that you originally purchased are indicated
correctly. If the name of the company has changed since your purchase,
you will help the acquisition process by listing the new name on a best of
knowledge basis.

Our Legal Department will clarify your holdings, if you are not fully sure
of the number of shares you own or if the name of the company has changed,
please do not worry as we shall re-confirm your holdings on your behalf.

Please sign, date and return by Fax to: + 1 (206) 267-9842 or scan and
email to:
admin@tylercsg.com (Scanned copies are preferred for clarity).

To be fair, the website looks very professional, but the email might not have come from them. As someone pointed out, I would have been best to contact the accountancy firm directly, and see if they know what is going on.

Thanks once again!

The website screams scam to me. Just look at the amount of errors on the text, letters in the wrong place and incorrect spelling.

Also nothing else on google about them. Avoid.

I totally agree, it doesn't look professional or convincing at all. It looks just like one set-up to re-enforce a scam.

Whois.com reveals the domain was only registered on the 30th of August (i.e. a week ago!)
Registered to someone is Pampanga, in the Philippines (yes I had to Google it :-))

Thanks once again guys,

I have asked my Mother to pass them over to me, I think will try to string them along as long as I can to waste a bit of their time. Is there anyone who I can report this to, and would they be able to do anything about it?

…….anyone want to buy some shares going cheap, they are for a liquidated medical company biglaugh

One would like to think you could pass the details to police@philippines.whatever and they would go round and arrest her - but I suspect not.

The link I provided you above will take you to the FCA's website where you can report fraudulant activity.

Of course, being abroad, they are beyond the UK's jurisdiction but it can be useful as a means of warning others.

Rather than feel like you missed out on 80k, think of it as saving 8k as 10% 'handling' or admin charge up front is generally what they are looking for!

The first draft: "Our Legal Department will clarify your holdings, if you are not fully sure
of the number of shares you own or if the name of the company has changed,
please do not worry as we don't care what shares you owned as it is just the bait - we'll be happy to steal your money whatever you tell us shall re-confirm your holdings on your behalf."

If you wanted to you could tell them that you've actually got 27x the number of shares and see if they'll "re-confirm" that you're in line for a 6 figure payout (once you give them the admin fees etc).

Was it on PH that someone took on some gold mine share scammers and, after months of emails, managed to get the scammers to send them a tiny piece of gold?

Does this look like a suitable head office for the large international accountancy company?

I am having fun having a nice chat to the lady a few times a day, she is very friendly and very persistent. Also sounds like she is in a call center, wonder how many others are scamming people in that room? i asked about which governing body they are affiliated to, did not really get a straight reply. Looking forward to the phone calls tomorrow about why i have not sent my paperwork in yet! Also, going to see how long i can keep her on hold, lets try for one minute to start with biggrin

clap

Consider it a public service - the longer you can keep her on the phone the less time she has to scam other people.
