I know there are other PPI threads - but I couldn't find the answer!

Now as a PH'er I'm clearly far too smart to be paying PPI and never have done.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said for Mrs Gearchange who is to financial prudence what Joey Deacon is to the the 110m hurdles.

Last year Mrs Gearchange 'fessed up to the fact that she owed over 35K on credit cards and loans. This was a problem as I didn't have 35K kicking about and now her debt had become completely unservicable - and as she earned 9K a year as a teaching assistant wasn't able to pay it off (and this was only in the last 2 years having had the previous 5 off with the kids)

Anyway - I managed to get it paid off in a little over 12 months. I won't now be moving house or buying a fast car.

Upon further investigation (including a therapist to get the bottom of the spending addiction) it transpires that she has spent the best part of a decade moving the debt about onto various cards and loans.
Over that period I'm pretty damned sure she will have been stung for PPI - but there is no paper trail and the bank records only go back 6 years.

Where there is no record of the credit agreement (she will have destroyed the evidence as part of the subterfuge) is there any way we can realistically have any redress to:

1) find out what was actually sold and when
2) then claim it back.

I'd rather do it all myself than pay some godawful PPI company a 25% cut - but it sounds like a lot of ballache if I don't have the credit agreements and the paper trail

Will the PPI companies just take your last addresses and go off to do all the hard work? Or are you having to supply them with all of the information in the first place regarding exactly what was sold, where and when? In which case they add absolutely no value.

Any help would be greatly recieved. Our marriage has just about survived the lies and deciet and insanse spending (clothes mainly in case you are interested) but I'm 30 odd grand behind where I should be and if I can claw any of this back from the banks I'd be a very happy man.

Thanks

it is possible
I claimed back PPI from the halifax from a credit card I had in the 1980/90's I had no account number or any evidence to support my claim, basically just rang up and told them about having the card and that PPI had been put onto my bills without my asking for it.
They did all the digging, found my account details and within a couple of months settled my claim.
I'd say go for it, after all what have you got to lose.
Oh and please don't bother with a claim company, they won't do any more than you can do for yourself.

If its as easy as calling them and saying I believe you may have missold me PPI then they do all the legwork that's brilliant

Guy in office had HSBC write to him asking if he had ever had it, he filled form out very vague - they did some digging - month later sent him bank transfer once he had signed full and final settlement forms.

Did you remember the PPI on there or just thought it as worth a punt?

Be honest, write to each provider and ask them to verify whether PPI was attached to any account and, if so, whether they can verify it was properly sold.

They will do the leg work.

I knew insurance had been added to my monthly statements when I had the card, but wasn't 100% sure if it was PPI or not, so basically yes I did take a punt.
It made me over £20,000 so I'd say it was well worth it.
