Just had a ppi cold call which has got me thinking.

The only money i've borrowed is the mortgage, i was paying ppi but it was going to a company called connell residentia not to the bank supplying the mortgage.

Would this class as a ppi i could claim on? the only details i have are old bank statements with the direct debit/reference number.

Were you mis-sold it ?

Mortgage in question was taken out in '96 , but if memory serves me well it was implied as 1st time buyers we needed ppi to cover the payments if we were ill or lost our jobs, which it turns out is rubbish.

If you believe you we're missold, then make a formal complaint to that affect. It should not really be thought of as a 'claim'.

Also, don't use third party companies. Regardless of what they say, they just send a generic letter on your behalf then pocket circa 40% of your compensation.

I worked for one of those companies for a while last year, I would honestly say if you think you were mis sold it e.g you got it but didn't ask for it, were told you had to have it or you couldn't have the loan, that sort of thing then claim!
I would contact the financial ombudsmen instead of using a claim company! It's not that much more hassle and costs nothing smile

The strange thing is it appears the estate agents/mortgage advisor sort out the ppi as the money gets paid by dd to them not the mortgage company.

Will be phoning them tomorrow to see what the start date was as well as how much it would pay out per month if either of us were off sick.

Also heading to money saving expert for letter templates.

The financial ombudsman service can't do anything until you've given the selling agent the opportunity to put things right first

Right i phoned connell who couldn't trace the account despite the fact there still getting a direct debit each month, they gave me the number of the administration company they use (wessex) who found all the details.

Since 2002 i've been paying £44 per month mortgage protection, this would pay out £400 to me and £295 to my partner if we lost our jobs or were off work due to injury.

Our mortgage was £630 month fixed so this ppi would of never covered the payments so have i been miss sold a product?

Secondly is it worth keeping such a product going as the mortgage is now far lower.

It doesn't need to cover the whole monthly repayment, so it won't necessarily have been missold on that basis.

As someone else has already said, if you didn't ask for it but were given it anyway, if you were told you had to have it, or if you wouldn't have actually been able to make a successful claim on the policy, you were almost certainly missold. So, do any of these apply?

Actually looking at the figures again, the combined benefit is around 112% of the mortgage repayment (there are max limits, usually 125% or so of the mortgage repayment), so that's quite normal.

Thanks for the advice.

If i shop around for mppi other than making sure the payments cover the mortgage, what else should i be looking at?

Lastly the mortgage is now down to under 60k, so i presume i don't need as much cover anymore.
