They look for irregular use i.e a lump sum in one day and lots of transactions the next. Buying things like electrical goods, lots of online software etc.

My RBS/Natwest card get stopped almost every month and my Barclays business debit card is exactly the same. Normally they call you first via automated banking to ask you to verify a few transactions and if you don't answer they put on a hold.

Mine got stopped last week because I bought two items from two foreign countries in quick succession. Understandable and quickly resolved.

My HSBC card gets stopped for just about anything. Conversely, my Natwest card allows me to buy anything seemingly without any questions.
