So i just wanted a copy of my academic transcript from my old university that i left 9 years ago and they have taken 1 month to respond, with this.

Dear sir we are unable to help you with your enquiry as you owe £580 to XXXX university £380 of which is for tutition and £200 in the form of a loan. Please call the cash office on....... to settle this matter.

Why have i not heard anything from them in 9 years? Is this normal? Do these things have a time limit on them? I'm just gobsmacked.

Any positive input is greatly recieved.

Are you sure you actually owe the money? Many Universities won't let you graduate unless you have paid fees/library fines etc., even 10 years ago. If you do owe the money I guess it might depend how much you need the transcript.

Due to a change in circumstance I left before I finished, so I am hoping to finish the remaining credit via the OU I need about 80 I think.

I would have no record if I did owe them money as I was pretty footloose and careless whilst a student, although I worked hard... (for a student)

If the information you need is vital for the OU course it may be best to talk to someone at the University, maybe even at the Dept. you were attached to, and discuss the situation. If you really do owe the money and they have a record it may be possible to come to some kind of repayment schedule.

If you genuinely believe you do not owe the money you'll have to prove or argue your case. Of course, this may be difficult without any paperwork/emails etc. Your bank may be able to provide you with past bank statements, if they keep a record of them after that amount of time, but I doubt they'd do it for free?
