Due to some bad choices when I was younger, my credit rating is rubbish.

But I am looking to get a credit card now I am a lot more sensible.

I have two mobiles on contract, ( the wifes and mine are both in my name).

My credit rating is still low, which would be the best card to apply for?

Here's one. They take up to £200 (the credit limit) as security, which sets the borrowing limit, so presumably they'd offer this card to absolutely anyone.

Partially yes, plus we intend to go on holiday this year, and don't want to carry lots of cash.

Solo debit doesn't work in France.

Pre-pay currency card not an option? Or do you not have the funds to do this?

Honest question, but I also understand the need to fix your credit rating with a CC.

We could pre pay, but it's a 50/50 mix of a safe way to pay, and a credit report fix.

Let's treat the thread as a credit fix problem.

Vanquis- an excellent credit builder, they'll offer it to most people, apr is high but not totally silly and most importantly they will increase your credit rating if you handle your account correctly. Customer service is good, and their online facility is helpful.

When I wanted to fix my cc rating I went for a Littlewoods card (as in the clubbook).
Was quite a few back now but I did remember they started it up with a £250 limit that quite quickly went to a £2000 limit even though I never owed more than £50 on it at any time.

Barclaycard gave me a card with a low limit. If i can get one, anybody can.

I also applied to Vanquis before barclaycard and they offered me one but i turned it down after hearing from Barclays.

Most banks now offer a basic bank account with a VISA debit card which pretty much anyone will be accepted for such as:

http://www.barclays.co.uk/Otheraccounts/Cashcardac...

There is no credit check with the above account other than an ID check.

This will give you a VISA debit card instead of the useless SOLO one and will also make you more likely to be accepted for a bad credit CC from Barclays, Capital One, Vanquis, Aqua or Luma.

Capital One used to do one with a limit of about £250 that used to go towards your rating

Bonne chance mon ami if you are trying to hire a car in France with anything other than a credit card, bring ALL of the following..deeds to house, grandparents passports, personal letter of recommendation from the queen, and maybe just maybe you can hire a twingo.

Ignoring the holiday I'd say get one of th credit cards recommended above, use it but pay it off in full each month and start rebuilding your credit rating.

You don't know when you'll need it. But it takes time, so start now
