Just had a demand through for underpayment of tax from my SA for 10/11.

At the time I said to reclaim it through PAYE for 12/13, but having moved abroad I no longer pay UK tax so repaid it through my SA for 11/12.

It's clearly shown on my SA as an exactly matching amount included as "Underpaid tax for earlier years in your tax code for 2011-12" in the SA302 summary.

I rang them up, it took them less than 1 minute to look into it and say I'm correct and have nothing to pay.

Why don't they do this before sending out bills???

I've recently had 4 separate letters from HMRC detailing how I've under/over paid every year since 2006 (since this new IT thingy and their internal checks)

In total I ended up being ~£200 up on the calculation so a cheque was sent out to me. All very well, but I'm very strict about making sure they always have all the correct and up to date information (company cars etc.) so how I ended up over and under paying over 6 years I can't fathom.

HMRC = Bunch of useless mongs.
