Where are you based ?

Where are the companies based ?

How can you show that you own the shares ?

So you're UK resident and the companies are mostly too ?

Then Hargreaves or Sippdeal or similar if you are going to trade in the future, or possibly just your bank if you're just looking to get shot.

The ownership question is about how you are holding the stock now. Do you have an account somewhere with an electronic record - if so why not just sell them from there ? Or are these old holdings with paper certificates ?

The shares are part of an inheritance, they are paper certificates. We really just want to get shot of them and invest elsewhere, as our knowledge in dealing in shares is non existent as you can tell.

OK, then it’s all very doable but you’re in for a bit of a tedious time with paperwork.

First, only the registered owner can sell. Have they been transferred in name post-inheritance ? If so, and they are all in the same name, then you only have to do this once, otherwise you have to do it for each named owner.

Go to Hargreaves website and look for the Certificated share dealing / Postal Dealing Form at

www.hl.co.uk/shares/share-dealing/certificated-sha...

They’ll send you the stuff you need to
- Sell through them (money laundering ID checks; utility bill, passport copy, etc)
- Instruction form for each sale
- Transfer form for the certificates

You then send it all back to them. Keep copies of the certificates. You’ll get a cheque after about a week or so.
