Another E=Mail scam

First time I have received an email of this type. Email from an acquaintance concerned with the organisation of car shows. He tells me that he is on business/holiday combined abroad in Spain. He has had his wallet nicked containing all his cash and personal stuff. The hotel where he is staying want paying and until they get their bill to him paid they will not release his passport which is in their safe.
This chap then goes on to ask if I can send him 2750 euro to get him out of the problem!!!! I almost replied telling him to go to the Embassy for an emergency loan, then realised that would be a daft move.

So how do they know I am known to this person.
