Without going into details of the circumstances, we are thinking of moving house before our current 5 year fixed rate period expires. As I see it we either pay the penalty fee and get a new motgage, or if possible move and keep our existing mortgage. We will be funding the difference and house move costs by other means, so do not need to increase the mortgage.

Is it possible to do this? The new house will be of higher value than the current one.

Most mortgages are portable so if you're not reducing it and the new property is suitable for a mortgage then you should be fine to take it with you and not pay any early redemption charges. If you've got any paperwork handy it'll say whether the deal is portable. If not give them a call tomorrow
