SIR Paul McCartney is to marry for the third time, telling friends: “I couldn’t be happier.”
The pop legend, 68, has proposed to New York heiress Nancy Shevell, 51, after a “wonderful” four-year romance.
A friend said: “They’re head over heels in love and make a perfect couple.”
HIS first marriage ended in tragedy, the second in a bitter and costly divorce.
But Sir Paul McCartney has never given up on romance.
Now the 68-year-old former Beatle, who recently confessed, “I just love being in love”, plans to take the plunge again.
He has proposed to American heiress Nancy Shevell, 51, after what he described as “four truly wonderful years together”. Romantic Paul is said to have got down on one knee in New York last weekend to pop the question – and present her with a diamond ring.
A close friend said: “She said yes immediately – it was a complete no-brainer. The pair of them are head over heels in love and plan to wed as soon as possible.
“Paul’s children are absolutely delighted for him.” The couple were all smiles when they were seen together at a the Met Ball in New York earlier this week.
The friend added: “Nancy chose not to wear the ring because they’d only told a few friends and family and didn’t want it to become public knowledge too soon.”
Nancy and Paul, worth an estimated £495million, have not yet set a date for the wedding.
Insiders do not believe they will sign a pre-nup – particularly as Nancy is an heir to a £250million fortune from her family’s freight and transport business.
Last night a spokesman for Sir Paul confirmed the news, saying simply: “It’s true.” Paul’s brother Michael, 67, said: “It’s a surprise to me – but it’s wonderful.”
Nancy is said to get on well with Paul’s children – Heather, 48, Mary, 41, Stella, 39, James, 33, and Beatrice, seven.
Fashion designer Stella, in particular, is said to have given Nancy her seal of approval.
Sir Paul married first wife Linda in 1969. He was devastated when she died of breast cancer in 1998.
He wed former model Heather Mills in 2002. They separated in May 2006 and were divorced in 2008 after an acrimonious court battle and £24million settlement.
Divorcee Nancy has been nicknamed Jackie O by Paul’s children because they reckon she looks a bit like Jacqueline Onassis.
She and former husband Bruce Blakeman have a son Arlen, who is at university.
Like Linda with whom she was close friends, Nancy has also battled breast cancer.
Friends have been desperate for Sir Paul to find love again after his “hellish” marriage to Mills.
One said: “Nancy makes him so happy and the entire family love her so much.
“She’s also discreet and keeps her mouth shut, which Heather certainly did not.”
