Being a Northern monkey myself I was brought up to belive tories hated northerners. So the condems are in and we have top policy 'gurus' saying people from sheffield shouldnt have cheap holidays? Thats nice for the millionaire to say so. But why pick out Sheffield? why not Banbury, Luton or Daventry?

Boris is going up in my estimation.

One of the Government's top policy gurus has sparked a row after he told London Mayor Boris Johnson: 'We don't want more people from Sheffield flying away on cheap holidays.'
The millionaire Cabinet Office minister Oliver Letwin apparently made the remark in a private conversation with Mr Johnson, who was pushing for the government to build new airports.
The outburst from gaffe-prone Mr Letwin will fuel claims that senior members of the government are out of touch with ordinary voters.

PS If you think things like this go un noticed by the Labour votors who switched to cons this time(yes there were some) they will go straight back to labour. They might just get back in again.

So why did this push Boris up in your estimation? Just a little lost there as none of your point was about Boris, but Letwin.

It sounds like Boris needs a major kicking!

Whatever his job title, he's still a highly visible member of the Conservative Party!

  1. I'd like to hear the full context rather than the sound byte the mail have chased. As he was obviously on about domestic holidays as the article clearly mentions about 'staycations'.
As much as I hate the term.

I happen to agree with Letwin as it happens.

It doesnt change the fact that he is still a slimey little oik.

I'm always amazed at the number of people who will jump on a plane for 12 hours each way to go on holiday when they've never visited any of the stunning places their own country has to offer.

I'm not convinced Oliver Letwin actually knows where Sheffield is, just that it's north of Watford. And he probably just used Sheffield as a euphemism for any northern post-industrial town or city.

Moreover, I'm not entirely persuaded about the motivation for his outing by Boris? Wasn't he harangued not so long back for making some not very complimentary comments about Liverpool?

I don't understand the logic - planes will still fly whatever.

Boris's magical floating airport was one of the most ridiculous ideas of recent times

Total scum and an indictment of the modern Tory party.

They're no longer a party of opportunity and meritocracy. They're there to farm the population to the benefit of the elite.

The sooner they end up on the end of a pitchfork, the better.

Typical of the mindless stereotyping that's prevalent in most political opinion.

"The chavs are all like this, the toffs are like that, foreigners are whatever ....."

Everything's black or white - nothing's ever grey. Pathetic.

More frightening is that there are mouth-breathers out there who do believe this.

Care to enlighten us as to why people who hold that opinion are mouth-breathers?

Any comment like that made by Letwin is clearly stereotyping northern cities and their inhabitants as being of lesser status to their southern counterparts, no matter how tongue in cheek it was made.

Whether its right or wrong, it goes some way to explaining why the Tories are hated so much up here.

Boris has exceeded my expectations. He seems about the only decent Tory figurehead they have at the mo. It's a pity he's a bit bonkers though!! Hates Cameron, probably bullied by him at oxford..

Sadly, you could say the same about any party that has a hope of getting power in Blighty.

I said this before the election and the word on the PH street was "Oh no, the wonderful conservative party are going to gloriously and selflessly fix all the ills bestowed on us by those evil labour types"

When I attempted to point out that they are all politicians and by definition untrustworthy, self-serving, power hungry scum who would sell their own grandmothers gold fillings to the highest bidder it fell on deaf ears.

For example, before the election of our glorious new leaders there was a lot of talk of the laws passed under the last government regarding surveilance, civil liberties, cctv and the like. I said at the time, see how many of these laws are repealed by the new lot. Answer? None.

Likewise, the treatment of motorists as a cash cow. The raucous applause and gloating from the governement benches when Osbourne announced his oh-so-generous 1p reduction in fuel duty just showed how out of touch and clueless they all are. It meant sod all and if they had a clue they'd know that.

Nothing has changed but the colour. We're still gonna get f***ed by them at every opportunity.
