LONDON (Reuters) - Tough anti-corruption laws that companies fear will expose them to unlimited fines will come into force in late June or early July, a spokesman for justice secretary Ken Clarke said Monday.

The rules were due to be implemented by April but Clarke (Toronto: CKI.TO - news) delayed their introduction after companies complained the legislation was too strict and created uncertainty for multinationals and firms seeking business abroad.

Lawyers say the Bribery Act, approved by parliament last year, is more draconian than already tough U.S. rules.

Wednesday Clarke will publish guidance, originally expected in January, detailing how companies can comply with the rules and avoid prosecution.

So how will BAE sell anything now?

Policeman in Poland. I did drive too fast and he gave me a good deal.

Have also paid -regularly- for drinks for people who let me cut in line at festival's. Not a big fan of waiting 45 minutes for the pleasure of buying plastic coins in order to be able to buy drinks......

Someone tried to bribe me. Coming straight from the military into a civvy job that ran equipment for a government organisation I was in a meeting with my boss and our biggest supplier, discussing them supplying more kit for us. At the end of the meeting, after we'd discussed tripling the amount of kit they supplied, this guy said, "If there's anything we can do to push this through let me know. Anything."
I said to my boss afterwards that I must be paranoid because I thought that meant he wanted to bribe us. "He was, it happens all the time with government contracts", said the boss. No wonder anything that's government-led goes sky-high in costs! yikes

Travelled round Asia and the far east a couple of years back - did it so often that it became the norm. Airport officials, the Police, Embassy staff.

Once bribed a clamper in B'ham - offered him half the official release fee. He made it sound like I was negotiating to pay his company but it was pretty obvious where the money was going.

Nothing on a Mafia scale. Once in a while I'll pay to park on peoples driveways when large sporting events are on and parking is a problem.

Nope. Fortunately I've never found myself in a position where it might be required.

This new legislation does seem a bit daft though. Unless every country does it and enforces it, simultaneously, all it achieves is to make UK companies less able to compete with their overseas counterparts.

Bribed / tipped a security guard to clamber up on the Great Pyramid.

It was very much initiated by said security guard.

In South Africa last summer, working at Soccer City looking after a computer system. It was a match day and the police were shooing all the traffic away.

I got the taxi driver to explain in the language of cash that I had the official passes and needed to get to where I was supposed to be working (the walk was about a mile).

The officer accepted the explanation (about 80 Rand I think (£7.50)) and waved us through.

We got about 200 yards up the road before we were turned round again and I had to walk the rest of the way.

got stopped speeding in South Africa a couple of years ago while coming home with a Nando's takeaway. Guess who got the Nando's and who didn't get fined?

Um...are you sure you didn't just buy a ticket?

biggrin

Directly no, but in previous jobs I have issued paperwork for sales agents who had rather large expenses. And then there was this time when a customer visited, and ordinarily we'd buy nice gifts (iPods, digital cameras) but they asked for cash.
