Given that when there are any anti government protests in other countries we stick our noses in and send jets in etc do you think it's right that as we are having mass anti government protests that countries such as Libya can bomb our air defences and call for our government to step down?

Are the people protesting in Libya unemployable morons? I think that might be the difference we have here.

Only if the government order the army to target the protesters.

I wouldn't have said that the anti-government protests in Britain are anywhere near as serious as the protests in the Middle East. The protesters here are champagne socialists and the great unwashed who have nothing of any substance to say, but want to shout about it to anyone who'll listen; the protesters in the Middle East are ordinary people fighting despotic dictators for their right to liberty. On that basis, I'd say that nobody would have any grounds for telling our government to stand down, especially despotic dictators.

obviously my question was a little silly but i think we should concentrate on ourselves and NOT stick our noses into other countries problems.

how would we feel if jets started flying overhead bombing our government buildings.

seems to be one rule for us and another for them.

our protests seem to be far worse in numbers than I have seen in countries such as Libya etc.

But that's because we're free to protest. Some will use terms like "Police State" but we really don't know what it means.

good point, but surely the fact that people are protesting mean they are unhappy with this government. Personally i'm happy but if they are protesting doesn't that mean change needs to come about as we said it did in egypt and libya?

I await news reports about Luton being used as a rebel stronghold...

Cameron's response was, "They're welcome to it."

I agree, however how would the Police deal with a Poll tax type "riot" today.

Our Government isn't killing huge numbers of people. Nor are they shelling central London from the shires either.

If our Government was behaving in such a way, I have no problems for France or anyone else coming to the aid of our people.

Someone will be unhappy with any government. Parachute me into Barnsley or Luton and my vote is pretty damned irrelevant so if they don't feel they're being listened to I don't object to their right to protest even if I think they're wrong.

We do have a democracy, it's by no means perfect but it mostly works and we're not Libya or Egypt where until now 95% of the country could be against the government but if they tried to voice it the answer would be bullets, tank shells, or if you were lucky a rubber hose in the basement of a Police Station.

Not harshly enough probably. I'm not really sure what the issues are with deploying things like water cannon to deal with rioters (not protesters), I don't know if it's legal or political or if it's just some moral "not very British" thing.

I am reasonably sure that an "elected" Govt is slightly different to a dictatorship.

Generally yes and in this day and age I am sure you are right, but history is not helpful.

What's history go to do with it?
