Jack Straw has forgotten how to drive

Daily Telegraph said:
Mr Straw is completing a "driving refresher course" as well as received tips from a senior Labour colleague on how to cope with motorway driving.
Since 1997, the former minister is understood to have only driven short distances on quiet minor roads a handful of times.
A friend of Mr Straw told a Sunday newspaper: "Jack was pretty much driven everywhere for 13 years. He did a spot of driving on minor roads to run the odd errand but not much else.
"Perhaps wisely, he is taking some refresher lessons for driving on motorways and in big cities, that sort of thing."
Mr Straw, as Justice Secretary, announced in 2009 that the maximum penalty for reckless driving would be more than doubled from two years in jail to five.
Are we surprised?

You think he should just get back in a car and drive after not doing so for 13 years and obviously not feeling confident doing so?

He was likely 'working' whilst being driven around anyhow...

The clue is in the title, of course if he feels that he should have some training, well done him.

However the point of the thread is that when in power he, and presumably others in Labour, were completely divorced from real life. Presumably the current lot are just the same.

I thought this was reasonably clear but seems not.

Oh well.

What has not driving and being in touch with reality got to do with each other?

I think you want the usual MP/politician bashing and have picked up on the not driving aspect.

Prehaps he should have spent more time driving himself around and shopping in tesco's than running the country (ok good argument but..).

There o more or less in touch with real life than any privalaged top exec.

Oh ps off!

Do you think he forgot to drive because he took a bus everywhere. No this tt has forgotten how to drive as he has an all expenses paid fking chauffeur at his call 24 hrs a fking day.

This is the same tt who will tell you tou take public transport instead of driving.

I doubt if he could spell bus let alone get on one.

Bunch of self interested clueless tts.

Well for example, Labour's war on motorist, trying to force use of public transport, suffering consequences of inadequacies of said public transport, suffering lack of any public transport away from major urban areas, trying to run job / family when also having to drive oneself long distances to site / meetings etc.

Might have to agree to disagree then if you can't see it.

Incidentally this is the same prat who indirectly got his driver nicked for speeding going to a party meeting iirc.

Oh I'm sure your right.. biggrin

Theres no way a top level minister could get through their workload if they had to shop or drive themselves. It just wouldnt happen.

For good or bad they spend a lot of time working...

Yes, because governing a country has got so much to do with "real" life! Why only yesterday I got into work, answered a couple of emails and then had to make a major decision that would impact millions of peoples lives.

You could say that given the insular routine hum-drum lives that most of us lead, combined with the drip fed nonsense we get given by the media, it is in fact the majority of us that are out of touch with "real" life.

I was in a queue in Hesters butchers in Vauxhall one day - it was even busier in there than usual - when one of the guys behind the counter said "who's next?" and at that point some bloke tapped me on the shoulder and said "I think you're next."

It was Jack Straw.

True story.

Whilst being partial to a bit of politician bashing myself i don't see anything wrong with someone taking a bit of driver refresher training. Let's face it, PH is the first place to moan about older drivers and how they should be retested periodically. I've trained a few drivers who, had they had a less responsible attitude could have jumped straight into a car after a long break from driving.

It’s good that he's taking lessons, it fking terrible that somebody who created / passed legislation governing the use of the road network in the UK, didn’t have any experience of the impact of their legislation. . . . . it’s not the first time and it won’t be the last time that this sort of thing comes out, don’t forget that our 70mph limit was brought in by Baroness Castle . . . . Who couldn’t drive and apparently set the limit at 70 not just on the advice from the police, but also as it was a suitable cruising speed for the Vanden Plas she was driven around in
