Ridiculous really, as an ex smoker seeing tobacco on display doesn't encourage me to buy them again, as a smoker I never would have been discouraged if they weren't on display, what utter st, and potential of clear packaging?

It's ignorant. As a non-smoker, I don't think, "Ooh, pretty stand, pretty packets, must buy." Do they think we're that stupid? It just proves they're that stupid.

Absolutely ridiculous... will you have to wink at the shopkeeper and give him a nod as you buy them as well....

Put a picture of Andrea Crossfiled on the packets, that would stop people buying them, she looks far nastier than that diseased lung image they use at the moment.

Pointless, it's just pandering to a minority of leftie-anti-smokers.

I don't smoke, never have, and I just don't understand what this is meant to achieve?

Removing the temptation to buy when you can see them on display. Instead why not make it even more exciting and dangerous for kids to buy these secret under the counter cigs and show off to your mates.

I will smoke twice as many, well buy twice as many.

Out of pure spite at how stupid and hateful this country really is.

The trouble is though, 99% of my customers will come in, get the same paper they always do and ask for the same cigs they always have regardless of what's on view.

Indeed a Tory government would never wast their time with... oh! wait a moment.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said he wanted to see the numbers falling faster in the next five years than they had in the past five.

"We want to do everything we can to help people to choose to stop smoking and encourage young people not to start smoking in the first place. We will help local communities to take a comprehensive approach to reducing smoking so we can change social attitudes to smoking."

And there was me thinking that they could do with the taxes to help plug the hole in the UK's bank account

Not once have I ever walked into a shop, seen the display and thought “Oh that’s it, I’ll buy some more tabs.”

Many times I have thought “I need some more tabs, I’ll just pop to the shop.”

Someone, somewhere is having a giraffe.

What next? Banning the display of mars bars so as not to encourage people who have recently lost weight to indulge? Banning the display of alcohol to discourage alcoholics from buying the stuff? Banning the display of porn to prevent serial rapists from seeing pretty girlies? (Oh, hang on, they have already done that haven't they ... ? )

Do we make a profit on smokers? Their tax paid vs the NHS costs?
