I wonder how many states would/could be self sufficient?

Which states put a surplus into the union and which ones get more than they contribute?

Incorrect. They may have had the opt out originally, but they seceded during the civil war and lost that right when readmitted. (See Supreme Court Texas Vs White)

That being said, any State ma leave the union with the permission of all of the other States.

Doesn't really work that way. Federal taxes are collected by the federal government and don't flow from the States directly.

I would imagine that if that Federal money flowed into State capitols, most States could be self sufficient (although severely limited militarily)

Since the vast majority of U.S. debt is owned by U.S. banks, we might stick around a bit longer. wink
As to oil and other natural resources, Texas is not alone as a state with such advantages.

California has also flirted with independence over the years, mainly due to the feeling it subsidises most of the rest of the States.

I doubt that that is the case right now...

I did hear somewhere that California would be about number 5 in the world for the size of it's economy if it was separated from the USA. It might have changed a bit over the last few years, but it is still a big economy by any measure.

This idea has been gently floated on Fox News a couple of times, usually by ex-governers and state officials and usually on the back of "not supporting those Kansas City faggots and Prius driving lefties over in California who couldn't balance their budget and now want us to bail out their godless, lily livered asses,".

Doesn't seem to have gone much further than that but I'm sure it might be mentioned again.

Prior to oil you were either a rich Texas cattle baron or a serf. The reason why so many early oil moguls looked, acted and dressed like cowboys is because they were cowboys. They owned the land.

You sound a blast at tourist hot spots. I think you could quite happily make a TV series on such comments.

A bit like the Idiot thing with Karl Pilkington.

Any state can leave the union if all the rest agree hmmm can they vote a state out if they all wanted to? If so who do you think would be the first to go?

The State would have to petition. It's not like "Survivor". I don't think anyone would be voted out. Despite the p!ss taking that goes on between the States, I don't think that anyone would really want to see any State leave... (not to mention that the landlocked ones would have a hard time surviving)
