Sunday Times Best Companies list
Discussion
They are always set up, I know of one winner of a best business award who spent weeks before the awards getting all their employees writing reviews and bullying customers in providing emails of good reviews (only the ones they hadn't pissed off). Then getting their marketing department to produce a book of recommendations and then setting up a new support line that when out of hours diverted to someones own mobile number on a rota system just so that if they were contacted by a mystery customer they could cover them 24hrs.
They won.
They were just as crap after the win as they were before but if they could have put the effort into their business that they put in to win the award they might have been a good (and still in) business.

These lists remind me of the Uni league tables. The time came around for rating the course I was on for "student satisfaction".
The whole year group was asked to come to a meeting where it was explained that if we rated the course badly it would devalue our degrees. Obviously, rating the course highly might make employers look more favourably on the degree. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that you'd want to rate your course highly after that.
I assume the same sort of thing goes on for these awards?
