I have just seen it reported on another thread that Mastercard and Swiss Bank Switzerland Post finance have been taken down.

This is apparently part of operation payback.

Will this turn into a huge cyber warfare attack throughout the leaks?

Do you think this is the right form of action?

I kept this separate to wikileaks, as it has generally been more towards the copyright side of the internet. However this is now more about cyber freedoms. Personally I think it is daft to be cutting off wikileaks, if they are to do that it is the same as a newspaper reporting on the stories.

They should have been concentrating on their security beforehand, not trying to scramble around afterwards.

Meh, I don't think the mastercard.com website is that big a deal.
If they had DDoS'd the gateways the payment terminals use to connect to mastercards backend I would be very impressed.

It started off as just government documents being leaked online, which in it self is nothing major really

The actions and words of many of the international governments has turned it into Government vs The Internet & Freedom of Speech, and it is something that the Government cannot win.

I know this is off topic but I had to look up Operation Payback on wikipedia, and it linked to another attack called Operation Titstorm which is the best name for anything, ever.

Any operation orchestrated by 4chan will have an amusing name.

Operation "storm in a teacup" would probably be a more accurate name.

As if it fking matters.

Like they've done here you mean?

Whilst Mastercard don't admit it, I use Sage Pay for accepting online transactions and received this email from them earlier:

Sage Pay said:
Hello

There have been reports today of service disruptions with MasterCard SecureCode. As such, some of your customers may find it difficult to use Mastercard SecureCode to complete their payment.

Nothing has been confirmed to us by Mastercard, however we'll continue to post updates on our monitor page, as we find out more.

Please note you will need to sign-in to the Sage Pay website to access the monitor page.

Kind regards

They're after Visa now, claiming to have taken it down on twitter feed.
http://twitter.com/Anon_Operation

The server at www.visa.co.uk is taking too long to respond.
Same at visa.com

A couple of big scalps claimed.

Those "big scalps" have there own mercenary armies. Some real scalps are going to go missing if the children don't stop acting out.

The two largest motivators on the planet are money and pussy, and these fools are tampering with one and may soon get it in the other.

Depends if they can be found, Jim. Remember DeCSS? Super secure professionally designed encryption hacked by one teenager with a program small enough to put on a T-shirt...

There's going to be a ststorm if they really have taken out payment gateaways. A bunch of 16 year olds are going to get a right bking! I doubt anyone but the organisers used any kind of proxy.

I think you misjudge those involved.

If you start thinking of "them" as stupid then they will always have the element of surprise.

Fool. You're the sort of character go out when a titstorm has been forecast expecting light showers of lovely pert jubblies, only to get flattened by a category 5 Widdecombe jugnado, and then expect some sympathy.

Quite this group has been around for some time now and they if the news reports are to be believed quite adept at taking sites down with things a lot more sophisticated than a simple DDOS although quite clearly they are able to take down major organisations at will.

I have worked for a few large companies that have been repeatedly DDOS'd and the truth is very few if any are ever caught and even less are prosecuted.

The law in the Western world really doesn't protect businesses from these things.

It really is the wild, wild west out there on the internet.

I think you may be underestimating them, it isn't just bored kids out there.

There is a lot of support for freedom of speech and this is an outlet for all of them to come together. Also a lot of these fools don't actually respond to your traditional motivators, as this is a belief. A bit like a religion.

I really don't. I used to hang out on 4chan before it was popular (When it was on vinyl) and the people that get involved in this raids rarely understand the ramifications of their actions.

Oooh, here come the big bad Merkins to slap down anyone they don't agree with. Freedom of speech unless they don't like what you're saying, then they want to kill you (Former Governor of Arkansas FYI Jim).

I hope that the US is about to get the massive bh slap that it deserves over this, either from wikileaks or other countries, hopefully both. Still, it's shown them up for the hypocrits that a lot of us expected them to be for some time.
