I don't believe the quote. Boris wouldn't say "stadiums". It might have passed into modern English, but it's not a Boris thing to say.

fking olympics.

£12bn of taxpayers money for 2 weeks of pointless crap.

At least Boris is saving us some money now, but it was never his to offer to the FIFA people anyway - that's OUR money Boris, not yours to curry favour with.

WTF. Why are Locog paying hotel bills for ANY VIPS/freeloaders? What next first class flights and hookers?

If some visitor to the games wants to stay at a hotel they should bloody well pay for it themselves. If they're attending in an offical capacity eg as FIFA president and "entourage" then let their organisation pick up the fecking bill. FIFA has recently become awash "cash", time to spend it.

Give over.

The World Cup being hosted in the UK was cash in the bank. We have the stadia to host the World Cup, we have the transport links, and so forth. There would be very little investment needed for the World Cup if we hosted it. UK Plc would have been quids in, and there would have been very little taxpayer investment in the whole thing.

The whole point of a bribe is that you get something in return. We didn't, so offer of the rooms at the Ritz withdrawn.

And people are right to be upset. As the England manager said, the whole application was supposedly based on technical merit, yet went to the two nations who were least qualified. If the application is about widening the appeal of the World Cup then they needed to have said that from the start and England wouldn't have wasted £13m on the whole venture.

As an incentive (not a bribe) to vote for us.

We should have just gone the whole way and offered them proper bribes then.

You can't play clean in a system you know to be dirty.

Either use the same underhand methods the Russians were alleged to have used or don't partake in the contest at all.

This holier than thou attitude is part of the reason our nation's standing in the world (economically) has taken a dive. It's no wonder the Chinese, Russians and Arabs are racing ahead.

If it makes us money then bribe away.

Offering accommodation is the done thing in the World cup for a lot of sports bodies.

Perfect. Undesirable, and not in the public interest (as they made perfectly clear this week)

Nice work, Boris.

Also bear in mind this:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10091277

BBC said:
The bidding nations have been asked to comply with a wide variety of conditions that Fifa has laid down - and which it would like to keep confidential.

Among them is that the entire event should be free of tax for Fifa.

"Any host country requires a comprehensive tax exemption to be given to Fifa and further parties involved in the hosting and staging of an event," said a Fifa spokesman.

I'm not politically driven but I've always liked Boris and this decision re-enforces that.

Good work.
