I appreciate that he has a chequered past, but wouldn't it be great if a few more celebrities did this, I know many do but I think that this is still worthy of a mention.

Nice gesture from him, amusing that a hospital has a Ronald McDonald house.

What a fantastic donation. I am very impressed with his generosity.

Shame a few more 'celebs' cannot donate a bit of cash to similar charities.

Maybe some do, but are not overly concerned about impressing others. Still, if a celebrity pissing match could raise lots for good causes then fine.

Footballers take note.

Nice that he's not made it a political gesture - purely personal.

Well done.

Why McDonalds have been running this very worthwhile charity for years, providing accommodation for parents of very sick children. here

I dont agree with his politics, however that is a good gesture and shows that even though at times his actions have damaged the city, his heart is in the right place.

Wasn't he in the National Front?

Funny chap and great gesture.

Good stuff.

I'm amazed he's worth that kind of money actually. I know he's done a bit of TV, the odd film, and there's been a few books. So I'm sure he's earnt a few quid over the years, but being able to give away a million is quite something.

Heard this on the news today. Trust me when I say the decision to go public would have been discussed. The fact that he chose to go public reduces the philanthropic value in my view. The real heroes are those that give significant sums anonymously. He didn't.

I read he actually gave this away a couple of years ago, who knows, still pretty generous to give money away who evers it is ;-)

So when was the last time you dropped the equivalent percentage on a charity?

God, some people can moan about anything can't they?
