There is definitely some irony in the whole world watching the rescue of some miners on Maggie's birthday...

First 6/7 years good. Put unions in order. Second 6/7 years, she went mad.

Lawson boom, petrol prices going from among lowest in EU to highest, VAT doubling, and i guess for many, the Poll Tax. Lets not forget she was also instrumental, along with Heath, in surrendering us to the EU, which is unforgivable IMO.

She didnt reduce taxes, she just shifted them from rich to poor. She didnt so much reduce the state, rather just sold of state assets and continued to deficit spend. That being said, we owe her for wrestling control from unions, that, unchecked, would have eliminated the semblance of democracy we have in this country. I think people today are very unaware of the threat unions posed to the country then.

Still the best PM in living memory though, which shows what a shower the rest of them have been.

I don't actually every remember her pulling the sexism card, she just sort of got on with it, not like some of today's female politicians. And heck it was harder for her as it was male dominated at the time. Fair play to the woman.

The Falklands and saying, "No, up yours", to the EU.

When dining with the cabinet in a restaurant......

"I'm having steak"

"And what about the vegetables?"

"They are having steak as well..........."

Ditto, one great lady to who we owe a great deal albeit her achievements have been scuppered by Bliar RIP and Brawn RIP. Hopefully Dave and Nick can right the ship but inheriting a severe broadside of the usual Labour debt is a severe handicap.

I won't argue point for point, partly because it is tedious to read, and mostly because of the time of night.

This is the more clearly correct part of your post:

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but why did British Leyland fail? Surely PSA and Renault not no mention Lancia etc were still selling cheap cars in the UK.

The unions were assisted by the Bennite mega mergers that created it. But that's another thread...

Killed UK manufacturing, cut taxes for the rich, whilst increasing them for the poor, put millions of skilled workers on the dole.

Many of the problems we are facing up to today are as a direct result of her single-minded obsession with the Unions. If she hadn't been so obsessed and had worked with the Unions, then we may still have had self sufficiency in energy as well as having some kind of manufacturing industry producing goods to export.

Very fortunate timing with the Falklands - if she hadn't had that to bolster her popularity, she'd have been out after one term.
