According to this

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11490437

not very much it seems

"Singers Lady Gaga and Beyonce Knowles made the top 10 while Queen Elizabeth II appears at number 41"

What a load of rubbish.

If we ever get a Hitler type political person trying to get in charge of our country we have some last resort with Her Majesty, I doubt Lady Gaga could say the same.

I guess real power, but not used, is judged a lot less nowadays than wide spread public fame but backed up by nothingness.

It doesn't say important, it says powerful.

And I would say that Lady Gaga is probably more powerful, in that if she tells all girls to go out and buy x product, or do x activity, shed loads of people will do just that. The Queen could say something, but far fewer people would be influenced by her.

Obviously the Queen has a lot of power as part of her 'job' though.

Is that power or influence though?

In these days of celebrity, influence pretty much is power.

No one will remember Lady Gaga in 5 years time when she's finished at the bankruptcy court and back working as a stripper.

"Popular culture" has so much to answer for now, I think. Not all of it good, either!

Top BBC news just in: American publication surveys Americans and they think an American woman is the most important woman in the world rolleyes

I thought that "knowledge was Power". In which case Vicky Pollard is more powerful than Gaga.

Incidentally they put the CEO of Kraft foods ahead of their own Secretary of State clap

People die for the Queen (and Country) on a nearly daily basis, that is real power.

They are naming the Olympic park The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Piss poor name IMO, and displays an utter lack of imagination.

It's not like she doesn't have anything named after her already.

To answer the OP, very important.

She's the head of state, not just for us but of a few other countries as well.

Now think of some of the people who might do that job if she and her family wasn't there. Scary isn't it? President Prescott, Blair or Mandelson anyone? Or perhaps a celebrity or someone from the Greens to give reducing carbon a bigger profile...

Just by blocking the top job she performs us all a service every day. Significant numbers of people in other countries where she is also head of state see it this way as well.
