All present for assembly? The head will now eat a tarantula

A headmaster gave a lesson in how to grab everybody's attention by eating a tarantula at assembly as fascinated pupils and teachers looked on.

Aydin Onac, head of St Olave's grammar school in Orpington, said the spider, which had been oven-baked and freeze-dried, was "crunchy and salty" and a lot bigger than he had realised.

He said pupils were "very excited and enjoyed the event" although some had to be assured that the creature - imported from Cambodia where they are farmed and eaten as a delicacy - was from a "sustainable source".

Parents had been warned in advance about the "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here" style fund-raising stunt in a letter. A total of £1,700 was donated in sponsorship from pupils.

Mr Onac said: "It wasn't until I opened the container and saw how big it was that I started to feel very nervous.

"It tasted quite salty and a little bit like burnt chicken. It felt crunchy and very dry, like eating those very dry cheese biscuits.

"As I was eating it I was thinking about the quickest route to the cloakroom and whether I would still be alive by break time."

The spider was imported by Edible, a company that specialises in exotic food. Mr Onac said: "Ten per cent of the profits from the company go directly to the conservation of rare and endangered species worldwide."

Mr Onac took over as head of "outstanding" St Olave's last month. He was previously head of Fortismere school in Muswell Hill, and became the first head in the country to receive a £40,000 golden hello when he joined in 2006.

My old school. Wouldn't have happened in FDCs day.

Not a bad amount to raise.
