Why do news agencies use this when they mean genocide?
It's like they're trying to play it down.
BBC News are currently at it when talking about Bosnia going to the polls.
Or am I misunderstanding and what they mean is racially motivated war encompassing everything?
As I always took ethnic cleansing to mean a way of forcefully moving a certain race out of an area using semi legal means, Israel and Palestine being a (bad) example of my understanding of it.

I think genocide involves the killing of all the members of a race in order to remove them, whereas ethnic cleansing can include removal by things like deportation ect. ie. doesn't have to include killing.

So think of ethnic cleansing as a Korma, but genocide as the full vindaloo.

ETA: spalling as usual.

Nearly a day since you posted this and nobody from the hand-wringing 'what about the holocaust and how can you be so insensitive you bd?' brigade has been by? Tut tut. Stay there and I'll see if we can get someone round.

Ah ok, so it was my lax comprehension of it leading to my misplaced ire towards the BBC
