Maybe the Labour party should buy all the cards, or offer to swap them over to labour party membership.

Hopefully all the terrorists were the first to buy them.

At least that was the plan as I understand it.

I thought about buying one as it was patently obvious that there would be a (very) limited take up and the scheme would be scrapped - so there may be some future rarity value.

But I didn't buy one as I couldn't be bothered.

This has made me smile. Wonder if people still run up to Jacqui Smith ( I think taht was her name) asking her when they could buy their cards?

I have a kind of an ID card - as an immigrant it makes life very easy for me opening accounts with utilities, signing contracts, and entering the country as it acts as my work Visa too. IF implemented properly, the ID card could have been a good thing. But Labour did it so it was st.

Ah but your ID card probably doesnt hold biometric information about you on it does it, as lets face it, there's no need for anyone to have that information. Also, theres probably no field on it reserved for 'Other biometric information' as there was with the ID cards from the socialist criminals prieviously in power.

If getting rid of the ID card scheme is the ONLY thing teh coalition do, then its been worth it.

(well, maybe a slight exaggeration but you get the drift)

Ah well, some you win, some you lose.

I have no problems with an ID card, in fact I have one, it's called a driver's licence and carries more than enough information upon it to identify me. I can carry it when I want and use it when I want.

What was appalling the scum seeking to make us all carry them like we were in Nazi Germany and to have them carry an awful lot of very personal information which was not necessary not indeed the business of the state to know.

We also have another optional ID card, apparently its called a "passport".

On a train back from London a few years back, I bumped into a guy that I'd worked with a good 10 years before. Was good to catch up on old times, and find out where he was working.

The jammy sod was working on the ID card scheme. He was on some bloody good money, the only winners from the whole scheme were those developing it. The government of the time didn't care about money, so the only losers are the public.

The problem with passports and driving licenses are that:

They don't show your work/immigration status, and not everyone has a driving license.

My ID card shows that I am in the country legally. My landlord has to retain a photocopy as it's a serious offense to house an illegal here.

I know that after 30 days of unemployment, they WILL take my card off me, and I WILL be ejected from the country. Compare that to overstayers on student visas and the like in the UK.

I'm not arguing for Labour's ID card, but I can see some merits if it's used in non-intrusive ways, as mentioned above.

I think there would have been numerous positive uses for it.
However for me these are outweighed by the 'function creep' that was basically built into them from the start. Too orwellian for me, thanks!

You do realise that you have to "renew" your plastic driving license every 10 years even if the photo is a perfect match/in condition? a "snip" at £20, or you could pay the £1000 fine. So say you a driving lifetime of 40 years, thats 40/10=4X £20= £80 for your ID card.....

And your passport, which I believe is also a 10 year cycle and £80 a time.

I would absolutely love to see the £292m worth of invoices for this stupid ID card scheme.
It would highlight just how much money the government get conned out of on a yearly basis..

Yes. But it does not contain vast amounts of irrelevant information BUT still proves my ID, so it is a price I am willing to pay (don't get me wrong, I am not delighted to pay it).

Simple. Move house. It's free to change then biggrin

Actually...has anyone ever tried submitting a change of address form with the same address on it?
