UK Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation remained unchanged in August at 3.1%, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

It means the rate remains well above the Bank of England's 2% target, and it brings to an end a three-month period during which the rate had been falling.

The unexpectedly high rate was boosted by strong rises in airfare, clothing and food prices. Fuel prices fell.

Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation slowed to 4.7%, down from 4.8% in July.

Economists had forecast lower rates of inflation for August, with CPI expected at 2.9% and RPI at 4.6%.

FFS, if I was as bad at hitting my targets at work I'd be out on my ear.

It's funny how you notice the little things.

Two years ago, a packet of Cadbury's brunch bars cost £1.24 in Sainsburys.

On Sunday I bought some. I thought to myself, £1.64?? Jesus.

A 32% increase in two years.

Is that what Merv is relying on?

it's the little things that get you - a can of fanta from an ice cream van £1.25.

A sub of the day gone from £1.99 to £2.30

Polo mints used to be 10p now they are 60p in shell garages.

Drinks like lucozade, oasis etc always used to be 80p, now £1.25 in garages.

car magazines knocking on the door of £5

a large starbucks is about £3 odd i think.

A salad from Phillpots in leeds (just a sandwich shop, albeit a nice one) is £4.95.

even at the cinema it's now £1 for 3d glasses and £1.50 upgrade for the premier seats and about £8 a ticket. Used to be £4.50.

Every bloody thing you do nowadays is a fiver.

Drinks in nightclubs - in leeds the other night it was £4 a tequila so for a quick round of shots that last 20 seconds before you are lining up for some more was costing about £20.

I pint of stella is now over £3 even in tatty pubs in yorkshire.

classic car inflation is high too.

houses seem to rise at more than inflation too generally speaking.

Inflation is actually really high - i personally think more than the figures suggest.
I'd agree with that. Our shopping bill is spiraling out of control on regular things like meats, soft drinks and all sorts of general stuff that we buy to stay alive. Chicken breasts, soft drinks, mince, meats, veg - and have you seen the price of fish! At least beer is still cheap in the supermarkets...

Let's not forget the public transport increases (from my place to London is getting ridiculous), and the price of raw materials and (decent) tools for hobbyist woodworkers has rocketed too.

Well understated if you ask for my real life experience.

And what did Merv rely on during the 'boom years' when we were apparently in a 'new age of prosperity'? Basically, it means jack sh8t whether or not the inflation is 2% 3% or 4%. We all know everything has got more pricey, and either spending cuts or rate hikes will be required to keep a lid on inflation .. but are we (and the bolshy Unions) prepared to bear the pain?

I'm not disagreeing with you at all, but I can cook a month's worth of dinners for about £20-30, maybe you need to shop around more and buy in bulk? £20 in Makro will buy you a 17 litre pan, I go once a month, get loads of meat and veg etc, then cook a pan full, and freeze. Use loads of different recipes and keep a freezer full that covers most of my meals, so food costs are fairly low overall.

and that's with fuel coming DOWN. God help us when it goes up and when the vat rise kicks in.

What will the CPI be in february's figures - 6% probably.

This is beyond a joke. It's absolutely ridiculous - I can't leave home now without spending £50. I don't know how people cope.

fill up car £62
parking in Leeds £15
Lunch at some cheap and nasty starbucks type place £7
God help you if you buy something like a CD/DVD/Computer or any accessories or clothes.

Just yesterday I probably spent £100 and didn't really do much other than go to headingley for a few drinks and dinner - drank cheap wine and watched a cheap studenty TV - hardly living well. Mind, you she was 20 and good in bed hehe

They are just using this long term excuse that inflation will fall back in the medium to long term but it has been bks for months and months and months now. He does need the sack now.
Wait until the currency really devalues, and see what it does then.

It won't significantly devalue against most of our serious trading partners. Probably strengthen versus euro etc

I think he was takling the piss?? Seeing as our friend spends more on food to stay alive than a family of 4, something to do with being a meat head.

The thing is it is silly little things like the sub of the day going up that you notice, a supermarket shop can creep up slowly and if you are on a budget will never be identical as a tin of beans will be bought on price so one month Branston, the next Heinz etc. but going from sub £2 to over £2 is noticeable. Supermarket rollbacks and special offers can disguise inflation to a degree but it is the odds and sods you really notice.

Actually, I was quite serious. We tend to cook from fresh, have no access to cash and carry suppliers like Makro and do a weekly shop at local supermarkets, supplemented with fresh perishables a couple of times a week. There's 5 of us plus a cat at the moment, 4 omnivores and one veggie.

The wild bird food sets me back about £15 a month too smile
