Fugitive tycoon Asil Nadir has flown back to the UK, after evading trial since 1993.

Mr Nadir, 69, left his home in northern Cyprus to face fraud charges relating to the collapse of his Polly Peck business empire in 1990.

He told the BBC he had fled Britain after battling "with immense injustice and tremendous abuse of power".

He has driven to London and will appear at the Old Bailey on 3 September. A bail surety of £250,000 has been paid.
why bother now? some saying its turkey doing its best to get into the EU

others saying his lawyers finally figured out how to get him off scott free?

I'd say he's banking on either getting off, or a very light sentence given his age if convicted.. i.e. would they really lock him up for 10 years when he's that old..

I mean, its not like he fled the country overnight, and stayed away for 15 years living a life of luxury, while all those millions went missing is it..
oh err wait a minute.. scratchchin

I reckon in about 2weeks he will mysteriously be diagnosed with some horrid disease that he can miraculously only get treatment for in the UK.

Or Libya!

Yeah, but chances are Nadir IS actually guilty.

My father in law had 5000 shares that peaked at £35.00 each which was to pay for his retirement. Sadly he didn't see the dosh! My bet is he's not feeling too well and has more chance fo treatment in the UK than Turkey

That can't be perfectly correct. A pension would never be solely invested in one stock. Or did he work for PollyPeck?

Wasn't his pension. Just a nest egg for his retirement. Privately owned shares

He's been away long enough that it'll be hard to convict - hence he's back.

Thomson holidays advert on ITV tonight:

"Get away to Cyprus"

Clever or just chance?
Either way made me laugh!

250 grand bail, 20k a month to rent his London house. He's obviously still a very very wealthy man. He's not going to risk his freedom just for a bit of treatment on the NHS.

He's obviously back because he knows the odds are in his favour re him being jailed or not. Or does he have some dirt on the Tories and is trading this for his freedom?

I agree the health theory is a bit weak, with untold resources I can think of better places to be treated for anything, eg Switzerland.

He was pretty much allowed to escape when he did, the guy who arranged bail and organised it has since died, that may well throw some new variables into the equation.

I very much doubt that this is anything to do with medical needs. There is nothing in the UK that cannot be obtained in other countries where he would be safe from extradition.

I'm sure there is a little connection to the change in govt in the UK, but the simple and undeniable truth is that when you are a multi millionaire who was used to the high life and everything that came with it Cyprus is a fking sthole full of goats, stinking tourists, squaddies and Russian crooks and London, US, Carribean, Monte Carlo is pretty fking awesome.

This is about a man who knows the UK does not want to push this case 17 years on, knows that no-one can be arsed to step up, knows that any witness statements will be valueless after all this time and knows that this is going to now be pretty much a formality that will see him able to enjoy life again without moving around on false passports.

He's just an old man who want to enjoy the end of his life and living in tinpot republics without extradition orders to the UK is not how any sane person with money would want to go.
