A car thief died after two lorry drivers caught him trying to steal a 4x4 and sat on him until the police arrived, an inquest heard.
Father-of-one Bernard Doherty, from Stockport, was restrained by seventeen stone Brian Machin and his cousin William Jones after trying to steal the Mitsubushi Shogun, an inquest heard.
Doherty, 24, had confronted Mr Jones and demanded his keys after following him to Mr Machin's home in Middleport, Stoke-on-Trent, on January 9 last year.
But the pair caught him and called 999 while restraining him.
Mr Machin held Doherty with a knee on his shoulder and chest, while Mr Jones lay across his legs.
But when police they found an unconscious Doherty. He could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at hospital.
Mr Machin and Mr Jones were arrested on suspicion of unlawful killing and spent months on bail until the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to take action.
The inquest at Hanley Town Hall heard how Mr Jones had been followed as he drove to Mr Machin's home.
Doherty approached him and said: "Give me the keys to the Shogun, if you don't, I'll turn you over".
The inquest heard Doherty, who had been in Stoke-on-Trent for a funeral, snatched the keys and jumped into the driver's seat of the Shogun.
But Mr Jones struggled with Doherty before Mr Machin pulled him out of the vehicle.
They restrained Doherty, whose face was under the Shogun, and told the inquest they thought he had stopped struggling because he knew he could not escape.
Mr Jones, aged 57, told police: "I said something like 'Give it up son, you aren't going anywhere,' and it was like he gave up.
"We weren't restricting his breathing as far as we were aware.
“We didn't want to hurt him, we just wanted to let the police have him. We didn't want to assault anybody."
A post-mortem found Doherty died from crush asphyxia due to an object pressing on his chest area.
Mr Machin, aged 53, told police: "If he had said 'You're hurting me' then we would have pulled him out from under the car. There was no malice towards the lad. I didn't think I was hurting him."
The inquest heard police, paramedics and hospital medics all failed to revive Doherty.
Verdict: Accidental death

So one guy 'takes on' two big fat truck drivers, they kill him and it's okay because he was stealing their car.
Shame we'll never hear his side of the story.
It's actually a very good thing we will never hear his story because he was a nasty person and now he's dead, which is wonderful.Shame we'll never hear his side of the story.
Not sure why the press made a point of mentioning Doherty came from a funeral... as if that makes ANY difference whatsoever?!?! So going to a funeral and, invariably, being "upset" does not give one the justification to try to take someone's possessions with threats of violence.
Doherty was a scum bag, thankfully now dead. f
k-a-doodle-doo! One less piece of human waste in society.
