Ok, so what's the PH concensus on this?

I think he has every right to refuse to see someone who hasn't the grace or manners to show their face in his office,

What next turbans on sikh's, jewish Kippah's. Why does he need to see her face?

We should respect their religion, some of them actually like wearing the face veils as opposed to being forced to wear them.

It a tricky subject which is never going to be resolved.

Very straight forward they should remove them. If I go into a temple in Thailand I cover my arms legs and remove my shoes. They should do the same when over here (obviously I'm not saying the Thais wear veils)

Because a veil hides the face which is the primary social tool of our species. Because it is cock all to do with religion. Because we honour other races customs so should receive the same respect.

Apart from the face being part of our set of communication tools that evolution developed, I see it as part of a male dominated religion and part of indoctrination. If you want to wear it, fine. But don't get the hump when people want to see your face.

A full face veil has nothing to do with religious requirements...It is a cultural issue. So absolutely no problem asking them to remove a face veil before entering public institutions. Simple.

He stood to represent his constituents. Women who wear the veil are amoung them. He should therefore meet them, and do so with respect to their beliefs.

How does he actually KNOW who the person is, if he can't see them? Has all sorts of implications for confidentiality and the like..

As far as I know he is no requirement in The Qur’an to totally cover the face. Wearing burkas, niqabs or the like is purely a cultural thing. So it might be reasonably for a MP to expect people to show a common courtesy and talk face to face.

That would depend on which one of the two faces of the MP you were talking to.

Isn't it already the case with crash-helmets?
What about base-ball caps, flatcaps and trilbies?

Neither this MP, nor Jack Straw, as far as I've seen/can remember quoted identification as being the issue. Not every meeting between a constituent and their MP is going to require a positive ID check anyway. This MPs comments were as a general rule, not just pertaining to occasions when he may need to confirm that someone who is who they say they are.

Hear, hear. In business you wouldn't insist on someone removing their veil. Why should a public servant, again, feel they can work to their own rules.

It sounds like he is being an arse for the sake of it and should perhaps grow up rather then trying to score petty points.
