Interviewer said:
You have a son in private education. Many people in the Labour party are opposed to private education. How do you react to that?
Diane Abbott said:
The Beeb let her silence last for about 20 seconds - an age on air - before they ended the interview.

Yeah, it's a cheap shot. But Abbott is the one who wants to be leader of the PLP.

hehe Good wasn't it.

Did you also hear Ed Balls claiming to have single handedly stopped the UK from joining the Euro?

She really should be prepared for that question. I'd have thought she'd trot out something along the lines of it being a travesty that she feels she needs to send her kids to private schools and is something, as leader of the PLP, she'd work to rectify. Blah, blah, blah...

The hypocrisy of the stance is less important in my view than her lack of political skills in handling not even tough questions. Why would that suggest she's a good potential leader of the Labour party? Lightweight.

Exactly, everyone knows Politicians are hypocritical, two faced twunts, it's how they disguise it that counts. Abbott just doesn't even try she's that dumb

Especially as it's the one single question she is guaranteed to be asked.

Thick As Mince Abbott said:
I knew what could happen if my son went to the wrong school and got in with the wrong crowd. They are subjected to peer pressure and when that happens it’s very hard for a mother to save her son. Once a black boy is lost to the world of gangs it’s very hard to get them back

I think that she is also likely to be asked about her racist views about white mothers. She has said that the reason that she sent her kids to private school was because black mothers care more about their children.

There are a lot of idiots in politics but she really takes the biscuit(s).

I'm no defender of Ms Abbott but that isn't QUITE what she said.

She said "Black mothers would do anything for their children".

Whether yoou take that as some sort of inferance that white mothers WOULDN'T do anythiing for their children is a bit of an assumption.

The implication is clear. To me, and many other people, the word "black" in that sentence can only serve to differentiate black mothers from other, non-black mothers.

You are free to believe, of course, that Abbott didn't mean that black mothers are somehow superior to white and other non-black mothers, but I suspect you would be in a minority.

not really, she mentioned the word black, so by inference she says all black mothers would do more than ones of a different colour skin, if she had said mothers would do anything for their children, then it would be a leap, but she specifically mentioned black mothers.

I'd agree CJ, it would be more accurate if she'd said "Most mothers would etc", and I dare say most fathers would also etc.

So she was being racist AND sexist imho.

I didn't indicate what I "believed" she meant. I was only pointing out what she ACTUALLY said. The previous poster misquoted her and was probably telling us what he THOUGHT she meant. He may very well be right - but it is still only his interpretation.

Perhaps she was also saying, by omitting the male figure in a child's life, that a black child is also less likely to know who it's father is...
