One of my neighbours mentioned the other day that he was getting a new mini diesel for less than a hundred quid a month via some scheme his employees ( the NHS )have concocted. I know people above a certain wage scale at our local council (sunderland) receive this perk and quite frankly, it boils my piss. I,ve been self employed for 25 years and paid every last penny for my cars on my own.How the hell can public bodies justify this?

He must need it for his job - an essential car user.

A friend of my wife's is a community midwife and she gets one. Years ago they were completely free - all she paid was private petrol.

For someone on basic tax, a free Mini as a company car might be only costing them £35/mth in tax, so I'd be pised to have to pay £100/mth.

Are you sure it's not a fleet purchase, with the discount coming from the manufacturer.

I'd love to know which part of the NHS it is that's giving it's employee's these nice little perks.

The bit of the NHS I work in, we regularly work without the correct equipment we need as they don't have any and claim they can't afford it! They're that tight in my part of the firm that they won't even run the cycle2work scheme as it'll cost them money!

I assume that as there's enough money to pay for this, I'll be seeing a reduction in taxes eh? biggrin

It could be through the Civil Service Motoring Association (CSMA) which is a motoring club.

If so the lease is not subsidised by the tax payer but is simply using Lloyds TSB CarSelect to obtain discounted prices from the car manufacturers.

I'll probably get flamed for this but 'perks' are what make or break a job! If they are getting a Mini for £100pcm then good for them. It's hardly going to be a Cooper S so why the jealousy.

I appreciate that some people don't get such perks however if your self employed and depending on how good your accountant is then you can also have 'perks' that salaried people will never have.

Just because they are public sector workers does not mean they should be doomed to st prospects with little 'perks'.

Nice new company cars for their 75-mile daily round trip to the (non-)job.

you're right - most people go into nursing and work long hours for pitiful pay just because of the perks....

as someone else said, most self-employed people are able to 'massage' the tax system so that disproportionate burden falls upon those who pay tax via PAYE.

In reply to shaid gtb,i am not jealous,i am merely pointing to the public money lining someones pockets again. If the fkers worked sixty hours a week like i do,then yes, they might deserve a perk like this. Why should people like me subsidise other peoples motoring?

I don't think non-management staff get such perks. I'd only wish that specialist staff e.g. Radiographers did have access to company cars.

In thick people's heads there are loads of benefits. They read about them in the Daily Mail.

I imagine the schemes are all pretty standard, here's one: http://www.sath.nhs.uk/Library/Documents/HR/Polici...

You get a lease car is that's cheaper than paying mileage allowance. Your average hospital Nurse does not get mileage allowance so the scheme is irrelevant to them.

Didn't mean to offend chap but i really don't see what the fuss is about. Many of the 'fkers' will work long hours and even though you may think that they sit at work in an office doing zilch, reality is that there could be a lot of mental stress being applied there.

If they have some sort of perk where they get a car for little money then it really isn't such a big deal. Remember it's a cycle, they get a discounted car meaning someone somewhere is making a sale and hence the knock on effect and economy goes round and people keep employed. By people being employed it means more poeple can spend at yourt shop.

Yes you work very hard at 60 hours a week running your shop however you also possibly have an accountant who can 'advise' you on how to keep the profit figure low and the expenses figure high.

To be fair, this may well be due to the on-going legal issues with salary sacrifice schemes connected with maternity claims and benefit in kind. Many Local Authorities have placed an embargo on new schemes starting.

got 95% of the way to setting such a scheme up to be told by the LA that they would not allow it Grrrr
