...for the crimes committed by their offspring?

For example, a 15yo stabs someone to death. Should one or both of the parents be brought to account given the offender is 'too young' to be tried under the justice system? Should we lower the age at which 'children' are held responsible for their actions?

Curious as to others thoughts, as I am not yet a parent.

i got into the usual mischief as a teen, both my parents were out working so i was a latch key kid.

I dont think its fare to charge the parents unless they can be shown to have encouraged the bad behaviour..

ETA - i didnt stab anyone to death though, just naughty stuff.

In my opinion, the 15 year old should be held accountable, they're old enough to know not to stab someone and to know the consiquences.

It's nothing to do with the parents most of the time, whether they've had a st up bringing or a silver spoon, they'll do what ever they want, if they want to stab someone then so be it, but don't blame the parents.

When you do have kids are you planning on training them up to knife people? wink

Seriously - I don't think parents should be held accountable for physical crimes against others perpetrated by their kids, unless they have instructed said kids to do so. There is just no way they can be done for that.

However, crimes against property / possesions, then yes, I believe they should. The reason being that if therer is a retail value that can be attributed to tarquin or Jemima's antics then the parents should pay up.

In my experiencs kids aspire to be like their parents, ie if the parent(s) is/are working than this is normal and said kid will do their best and try and get a job.
If the parent(s) is/are sponging pondlife than said kid will think this is normal and not bother to get a job because everything is provided by the taxpayer.
So as Parents play a major role in forming how their offspring will turn out, they should be held partly responsible, to what extent though is the question.

Tricky. I think there is a huge gap in parenting today compared to yesteryear. At some point the parent has to teach morals, rights and wrongs, no you cannot have that etc. Maybe it should be brought up and made accountable at some point but how do you gauge it?

Yes, they should be held accountable. To counteract this though the legal time limit for abortion should be raised to 16 years.

Teenage scrotes should be eliminated. Their parents and siblings should be similarly erased out of prudence if nothing else.

The age of criminal responsibility is 10.

If a 15 year old murdered someone they would be tried in Juvenile Court, sentenced and then moved to an adult facility at 17/18

How would that apply here (which prompted my original question, incidentally)

Every case is different. I'd say the parents are partly accountable because it is their responsibility to bring the child up, but beyond a certain age the proportion due to the child increases and so that due to the parents decreases.

People are responsible for their actions and should be held accountable.

Making excuses and blaming others is not right IMHO, so no, the parents should not be held accountable - the only exception being if the parents are instructing the child to go out robbing etc..

Killing the parents isn't blaming them. It's making sure it doesn't happen again.

They're being tried for it.

Presumably as each of the vile little vermin was over 10 at the time of the offence.

We have had a lot of problems with my son, (he has just turned 13), including shop lifting, which he has recently been down the station for, taped interviews, dna taken, the lot. This was his last chance, next time, it's straight into custody and then court.

I have in no way encouraged him to be like this, in fact I have spent the past few years tearing my hair out trying to get him on the right path, he knows that we don't tolerate thieves and liars here, but that's doesn't stop him, neither does beating the crap out of him (well ok, maybe not that extreme with the discipline)

It's not fair to do it as a blanket one size fits all with regard to the scotes and the parents, I have done my best, and to be honest am totally out of ideas, with him, it's a case of him being really easilly led, he knows the other boys will beat him up for grassing, or drop him in it to the police without a moment's hesitation, but he seems to be drawn to them, time after time.

Apart from school and family outings, it's got to a point that he is rarely allowed out of the house these days, all in an effort to keep him away from them and out of trouble, plus, if anything does happen, then no matter how many of them try to give his name (as has happened in the past), I know it wasn't him, as do the police as they know, from me, that he is currently under house arrest.

To be fair, the police have always been really nice with me about it all, I think they can see that I am actually a parent that does care, and one that is doing their best.

Agreed. I know parents who have had the children of Satan, through no fault of their own. I also know someone who's father is beneath contempt, yet he's a nice enough guy.

The new law here (my state) holds the parents accountable for children doing anything from missing school to doing crimes. We have found that after paying fines and being arrested, those parents suddenly become vigilant and responsible.

If a child damages property and has no money to recompense their victim then IMHO the state should pay then recoup the money by paying minimum wage for work similar to community service.
In this case though you have to wonder how the kids knew what to do, TV or internet access not monitored or restricted?
Does this make the parents responsible for the crime?
If so then they should also be punished.

Anyone 10 or over can be tried.

I don't think it is cut and dry with parents. Some kids are just born nasty or with severe personality disorders.
